Shift kit...tuner...
Shift kit...tuner...
hey guys, i did a search but i couldnt find anything on the matter...
if u have a tuner do you need a shift kit or is it a waste of money?
imo it is not logical (depending on truck usage) to have both, correct me if i am wrong please and let me know.

Depends on how firm you want your shifts to be.
On the pre 04 trucks, like your 02, you can only bump up the line pressure via a chip so much before your valve body physically cannot flow any more fluid. If your up to this limit, and still want a harder/firmer shift then yes, you would want a shift kit so you can open that valvebody up more and push more fluid through there.
On the newer 04+ trucks, the valvebody is able to flow more than the older ones, so we can bump up the pressure a lot more before we need to do any physical type of modifications to our tranny, like a shift kit.

Depending on the tuner and the adjustments you can make it would seem a tuner would be an option with easier external electronic adjustments.
From what I understand about both one make electronic adjustments and the other requires going in the transmisson to make component mods.
In racing applications some kits also beef up the transmission to handle higher engine outputs.

i'd say hit the transgo kit from troyer and try it first. i did the medium setting, police/emergency vehicle is what its called. pretty good change from stock runnin 35" tires i could bark into 2nd (locked). i'd suggest not going to hotrod specs unless your really pushin the ponies. the tuner should top it off if necessary, im not sure but dont some tuners allow you to change shift pts? thats about the only thing imho worth buying one for
Yea , mine was easy too . Aren't you the one who talked me into it?
I had to make my own pressure plate - I screwed mine up the first time , Augered the holes to big and it SLAMMED into each gear lol.
Mine has quite a few different bodies - but it was easy.
Shifts freakin sweet -

We're dealing with 2 different transmissions here.
Jbrew's pictures are a 4r100. This truck likely has a 4r70w. Transgo kits for a 4r100 are ok. I do not care for their 4r70w kits. My preference on the 4r100 is a Factory Tech accumulator. I have watched Gregg build them. He knows more about them than anyone I know and I know many people in the sharonville plant. My dad worked there until it killed him. For the 4R70w I suggest talking to Mike Dunn (Madenterprise). For the 4r100 I'd get the Factory tech accumulator from Tim at Chickenears. They are both great guys to deal with and easy to get ahold of.

For the 4R70W and 4R75W transmissions nobody offers anything better than the products you can get from Troyer. I have to tell you that he absolutely knows more about these trucks and what they need than anyone out there that I have ever talked to. He is exceptionally quality minded and has looked at a lot of products to do this stuff. He demands to know what the products he sells actually do and how they do it because he wants to offer only the very best for his customers.
You can't go wrong with Mike.
