Can't Shift Manual Tranny 02 4.2 V6

I am having trouble from when I left off the clutch into first or second.....I can shift fine as I am driving but when I stop and go to neutral then go back to first or second to start I cant........someone told me this could be a failing clutch cylinder (master or slave). It is an 02 V6 5SPD manual 64,000 miles.......anyone else have this problem or know what it could be?

I have a similar problem when I pop the trans in nutral at a long light I have to pull it down into 2nd then to first. Will not go directly into first. I have an 01 with 56K on it. I have had many manual trans trucks before and I will have to say this one leaves a lot to be desired getting in and out of gears.

Bleed the hydraulic system.

Likewise, I have a 2002 4.2 with about 50k miles and i have the same problem on occasion. Shifting into first from a stop can be tough.

I was told my problem may be air in the clutch line.....and it might need the synchros redone on those two gears......any one else have this done? did it work?

Air in the clutch line will be taken care of by bleeding.

So what you are saying having air in the hydralic clutch line causes the trans not to engage from neutral? Is this because the it does not fully compress the pressure plate? Just trying to understand.

That is very possible. The M5OD is pretty stiff getting into 1st anyway - a dragging disc just makes it worse. I usually grab 2nd to stop the input shaft then hit 1st, it's an old habit from the non-synchro low gear days.

Interesting. I will give it a try.

Thanks!!

I tested mine today - to go directly into 1st, step on the clutch, put light pressure on the stick and 1.5 seconds later it slips into 1st. Do the same thing trying 2nd instead, it goes right into 2nd then right into 1st within 1 second. Bottom line - if you are trying to get it into 1st and it's not going, grab 2nd then it should go right into 1st.
