VSS (again)

Alright, I've started a couple threads on this, as well as researched the crap out of it, but I'm still at a loss. A few months back my speedo and odometer started going crazy, then stopped working altogether. I've been told it's most likely a bad VSS. After my research, however, my understanding is that the '00 and up 4r70ws don't use the vss on the rearend, rather the OSS on the tailshaft of the tranny. I need to know exactly how the speedo system works in this truck, as I really need to get my odometer working again. Also, it's a 4x4. Does that play any part in it? Is it a simple replacement of a sensor, or is it more involved? Are there any other known problems that would cause the speedo and odo to fail?

Most 4x4s use a sensor on the tailhousing of the t-case.

Okay, but what is that sensor called? Is it the OSS? And how can I test it?

Try pressing the odometer button and holding it while you turn the key to the run position. It will display tESt in the odometer after about 5 seconds. When it does release it. Then press it again repeatedly till you see dtc in the odometer. Continue pressing till all the DTC have been displayed. There might be a few DTCs stored. I would suspect U1041 or maybe U1123 or 1132.

Okay I tried that and is just said "dtc none".

I forgot to mention that I did have the codes read a few weeks back and one that popped up said something like "faulty VSS". I don't know what the code was, though.
