4.10 and other gear swap testimonies here!
 

Guys, I am fixing to have the gears switched out on my 2000 4.6Liter.
I am currently running the 3.08 rearend with out limited slip. As you can imagine she is a dog around town and not much better on the highway. Highway mileage is great returning close to 420 on 24 gallons, however around town kills it.
As you can imagine she has no balls out of the hole.

I would like for those wo have done a gear swap to post here a brief summation of what you experienced before and after the swap. 0-60 times, highway passing power, gas mileage and maintenance are all things I am looking for.

Lets fill this one up guys!

I upgraded the gears in my 2000F-150 to a set of Richmond 4.10's.The difference in performance was immediate as soon as it came off the jacks and we drove it.Much quicker out of the hole,and simply pressing the gas pedal,w/o catching passing gear,you go.the only drawback was you give up a little on your top end,but that is an acceptable trade off for me.I didn't notice a big difference in fuel economy,but then you are having so much fun driving your truck w/ the new gears in it,you don't even notice.After I broke in the gears,i installed the T/A performance diff. cover w/ the girdle and filled the diff. full of the Motive gear syn. diff. lube.Not one problem and the cover looks to cool.Upgrading the gears in my rearend was the one mod that results were instant and very noticeable.Good luck w/ your gears.Post back and tell how it went.

My 3.55's were swapped out for 4.10's at the same time the tires and rims went from 255/70/16 to 295/60/18 Toyos for summer and 235/85/16 Destinations for winter. The increase was from 29 inches to almost 32 inches.

My speedometer was fast 5MPH and the power difference isn't a lot.

It depends. If you plan to keep stock size wheels/tires then getting taller gears will increase performance on acceleration and hauling power. Espically going from 3.08 to a 4.10, you will notice a huge difference.

If you want to get larger tires, then the 4.10 axle will compensate and any performance gains will be negated or reduced.

You'll likely see a slight drop in mileage(small, we're talking <.5mpg ) with the taller gears.

HI!... I installed 4.10 gears about a month after I got my truck new from the dealer. Been about 8 years now. One of the best mods I did. With my built 5.4 I got 21.3 MPG on the highway with 28" tall tires. My new 07 RANGER will be getting 4.10's here shortly. :rocker:

where can you get bigger gears? where do you get them installed? how much?

im lookin to upgrade my 3.55 to 4.88

thats a helluva jump man :eek: !!!! do you have bigger tires on the truck to need that ratio ? I have 35's on my truck and 4.88's will be going in. I hope you arent putting 4.88's with stock rubber on

This site sells the sets for around $160. I am not sure if that includes the install kit. You need to take the truck to a shop with a lift and a bearing press. This is not something to be done by an amatuer as has been explained to me.

We've gotten some good responses so far. I do not plan to change my tire size. They are larger than stock being 265/70/R16.

I will never by another tire. The treadwear is outstanding and the tires look brand new with 15k on them!
I have a great ride with minimal road noise. I am looking for pulling power and acceleration. I am either getting on a freeway or getting off. Work is 8 miles from the house so I basically accelerate and decellerate to work. :P

The 3.08 sucks. If I was running a 460 under the hood, then the 3.08 would be no problem. My father in law has a 79 e-250 extended with the 460, a 3spd C6 tranny and a 3.07 in a DANA 61 free floting rea end I believe. That brick can 20 mpg at 65 no problem and you will never come out of gear. She pulls like a beast. Ugly as hell though. :)

You have got to be kidding me? The best I have ever got was 13.5mpg at 65mph. And your still getting 15 at 120? Is that thing really right?

I installed 4.10 gears a few months after I got my truck...they really gave the truck a punch taking off...I didn't suffer much of a gas mileage loss, if any...:thumbsup:

I would love to switch from 3.73 to 4.10, but I gotta switch out front and back and thats gonna be a butt load of money.

Curious on something here, if I upgraded from 16 in. wheels to 285/60/18's with a 3:55LS, will going to 4:10 gears even it out back to stock? If so why not go with 4:56?
