97 F150 Tranny interchange Question?
Ok we have a 99 F150 4.2L w/Automatic Tranny, Tranny went out so we purchased a tranny out of a 97 F150. Well little did we know the 97 has a 9 prong plug on the side and ours has a 7 prong plug, so they wont connect.
After reading here in the tranny information post we thought both models had the same model tranny, guess not.
So my question is what model tranny came out of the 97 and what is my 99?
Is there a model # on the tranny?
Thanks

All 4.2L trucks have the 4R70W trans. The 4.6L also would have a 4.6L, but the bolt pattern on the trans won't mate to the 4.2L. Same for the 5.4L. The 5.4L could have either the 4R70W or the E4OD. It doesn't really matter which, because neither will bolt up.
You MUST get a trans from a truck with a 4.2L.

If you are talking about the MLP or TR sensor by the shift lever on the trans, you can get an connector kit from your ford dealer to make the change. All Ford remans come with the newer style TR sensor and the connector you have to install. (comes with instructions). The trans will be an 4R70W.

I try not to remember what year when things change, just to much to remember. T E, sounds like you have the old basic gear driven speed sensor. One tooth equals about 4mph. Seen some manual trans with a elect speed sensor kinda like an abs sensor. Ford started putting 4R70Ws in around '95. The F150s with a MAF sensors on 5.0 liters had them. Most speedos are from the ABS system now. 4R70Ws use solenoids to shift gears.
