What's needed to swap a 5 speed in from a 4 speed setup?

Has anyone put a 5 speed behind their 300? I have the 4 speed now and see them in the salvage yards with 4x4 and a 5 speed trans.

Will the newer trans bolt up to the older engine? I know I'd have to get the clutch master / slave cyl and switch over to hydraulic.

Just curious if anyone had done this to their truck.

Thanks.

All smallblocks (300ci/4.9L, 302ci/5.0L, 351W/5.8L) have the same bellhousing pattern, so their transmissions will physically swap easily. Many people have done swaps like this, but your specifics will be slightly different. A lot depends on exactly which transmission you want to put in. The Mazda M5OD-R2 is pretty light-duty & common, so it's not desirable. The ZF S5-42 or -47 is heavy-duty & more desirable, which makes it MUCH more expensive, especially for a 4WD version.

You'll have to do some bare-knuckles drilling in your firewall to install the hydraulic master cylinder, but you can see me doing it by clicking my signature link & looking thru the Hydraulic Clutch album.

For more info on pre-'97 trucks, do some searching for things like "zf swap" on FSB.
