Trans problem

I just purchased a 97 f150 Lariat 4x4 4.6. The previous owner said he was going down a hill and heard a loud crack then a crunching noise. The trans will shift from first to second and stay in second, will not go into D or OD. I am not sure what tranny I have, it is says metric on a rectangular pan. I found a tranny in a 97 5.4 but it looks a lot longer than mine. Is the bellhousing the same? I just saw the trans identifer thread going to go read that now and see if I can figure out what I have.

Thanks!

You have the 4r70 which by the sound of it is now a boat anchor.

Thanks,

The 5.4 tranny is likely an E4OD....

Verify what you have first....

He has a 97, you have a 2000.

The E4OD was mated to the 5.4 until it was discontinued in mid-98. After that, the factory used the 4R100 only in the heavy-duty trucks with all the 1/2 tons getting the 4R70W. There were exceptions, usually due to substitutions caused by supply disruptions.
