You will look a long time because it's not what you think.
The motor drive that changes the tranfer case position sends the signal back from it's internal contact plate, to the GEM module.
From the Gem to the dash, then the light lites.
The only difference is a variation for the manuel shift system.
The trans selector is involved in the circuit..

The switch is near the breather hose on the front of the t-case. There are two wires to the switch. One is for 4Hi (gray wire) and one is for 4Lo (light blue with black stripe). With the key turned to run, unplug the connector and ground the Light blue with black stripe wire. This should turn on the 4Lo light. If the light turns on the switch is defective, replace it. If no light then more diagnosis is required.

you are saying the light should turn on but then next sentence your are saying if it does it is defective.
also if i go into 4 lo and then back into 2 hi my 4 hi light stays on and wont go off until the next morning

Unplug the connector. The connector is now in your hand and the switch is still screwed into the t-case. Ground the wire and the 4Lo light in the instrument cluster should illuminate. If it does illuminate by grounding the wires this proves that the circuit is ok. The only remaining problem is the switch.

I believe that it is a Dealer only item.
