cant ID transmission

ok i know jack squat about ford trannies, i know all about GM trannies from the th175 to the 4L80E and TH475(3L80HD) and so on they are simple to me

but under this 85 F250 i looked up C4 and C6 pans on google images http://raceabilene.com/kelly/hotrod/...rans/fatid.gif

and well its definftely not the C4
but its almost identical to the C6
except my pan also has an angle cut off at one corner,
in addition to the normal C6 indentated area at another corner

so.... i am confused? ?

should i take a pic ?

what should be in an F250 2wd with 5.8L

and how reliable is it ?

the fluid is getting dirty but smells fine, no real smell at all actually and definitely not even a trace of burn smell in it and it seems to shift fine

i need to drop he pan and change it soon regardless

what fluid type will this trans take ?
and how many quarts with a basic pan drop?

thanks for anything

Howdy and welcome!

I don't know much at all about GM trannys, but if'n ya look up at the sticky in this section, know a bit about the fords. hehe

Anyway, only automatic came stock and would work for the '85 is the C6. Pan shapes have differed over the years, but 17 pan bolts is the indentifier.

I'll get some better pics up of my '84's if necessary.

hi there oh ok so they changed them a little over the years ok,

yeah it looks identical to what i have seen as being what a C6 pan is supposed to lok like all excpet for a corner is cut off 45 degrees, unlike what i have seen on the net, otherwise identical

so thats cool

GM didnt change pans over the years, so thats what threw me off, in a way :PP

now to find out what type of fluid and how much is needed to do a pan drop change

thanks!

Mercon ATF.

However Ford in their retarded ways has stopped production of Mercon, and now only sells Mercon V.

The Mercon V has friction modifiers that the 4R70w and 4R75e needs to shift properly. Mercon with it's lack of friction modifiers was for the C6, E4OD, and 4R100.

Now Ford has said that the Mercon V with it's friction modifiers is safe for the C6, E4OD, and 4R100 with a "magical reformulation." I'm not trusting it for my 4R100, although the C6 with it's bomb proof design wouldn't care.

A full pan drop, TC drain, and cooler flush will get ya about 15quarts if I remember right for the C6.

so i guess mercon isnt type F right ?

would there happen to be a drain plug in the converter on this by any chance ?

i might be able to find some straight mercon at the Big R farm store they still have some older stuff on the shelves, might get lucky :P

also i noticed that these trannies have like no or next to no braking in forward range when coasting or slowing up

this is how they all are right ?

im so used to gm auto trannies, they have lots of trans braking in forward/reverse range

thanks more

No, Type F was discontuned in the C6 in '77.

How do ya mean braking? I don't drive my C6 truck much (only 298 miles in three years of owning), but it hauls down purdy quick if I manually downshift.

Edit: You have a Lariat!!! Me too! Very rare trim level in this '80-'86 body style.

I was at Advance Auto today and they had store-brand ATF in about every type. Mercon, Mercon III, ATF+4, Type F, Mercon V and some others.

I think Ford power steering pumps call for Type F fluid as well. Funny quirk about Ford, ATF seems to be a universal lubricant for them.

Should be a drain plug on the converter. Get a big socket/wrench and put it on the crankshaft nut and spin the motor over. Easier if you can get an assistant to crank the motor while you watch for the plug to appear.
