Tranny question for ya

my auto tranny in my 99 5.4 shifts into and outta o/d mighty wierd. it will do it one out of prolly every 5 shifts. it basically sounds like im running over a rumble strip for about 2 seconds. i have recently had the tranny flushed, fluid and filtered. i had the problem before and after the tranny flush. could this be an electronic problem. i have no lights flashing. the tranny also shifts hard too. my thinking is its on its way out, just a matter of time. is there anything i could do to check on it.

thanks josh

lurker!!!!!

140,000, not sure about the code on the door. i have looked for it before but wasn't sure what i was lookin for. i have been told that a failing electrical part would possibly cuase bad shifting and that rumble strip feeling.

Regular fluid changes are essential for transmission longevity.

I have had the same "washboard" problem with my 98 Expedition (4.6L). It goes away after a flush & fill and is fine for about 20K miles. I'm told it's caused by fluid breakdown and you'll feel the rumble when the torque converter goes in & out of lockup. For me, it was noticeable with OD on and off.

The U means you have the 4r70w tranny, the weaker of the 2. Same tranny I have and mine went out at 100k. Good luck:thumbsup:

I thought for sure you would have the 4r100 with the 5four L - That must have been in the tow package only that year .. Oh well ..

Good luck to yuh

I have a 97 F150 4x4. The torque converter slips when locking up. It happens more often when it locks up in OD, but sometimes does it in 3rd aswell. Is there a way that I could interupt the solenoid that enables the the lockup feature with a toggle switch. Im sure that my transmission wont heat up too bad just drivng around town, and if I go on a long road trip, I will enable the lockup once I get up to speed. I just need help identifiying the wiring.

Thanks!
Joe

Haven't had to replace the tranny because the flush & fill corrects the washboard problem for about 20K miles. Good luck bud!
