Question Manual Shifter

I am having to replace the clutch assembly in my 2003 F-150 4.2L 5-speed and I am having trouble removing the shifter. At the bottom of it, normally where there is a bolt, there is a headless bolt with a nut on it. As much as i try, I cannot remove this. I take the nut off and there seems like nothing else to do. I tried taking another nut the same size, tightening it on the first nut, and trying to back it off, but it just strips the nuts, wont even budge the headless bolt. So, what am I overlooking here, or what is the trick to this?

Remove the nut from one side and put it on the other end of the bolt and tighten. This will pull the lock through the shift lever.
