Problem with 4x4
Problem with 4x4
OK so I was driving home from Rochester NY to South Western CT in the huge snowstorm last week and at some points I decided to play it safe and put the truck in 4x4 cuz it was almost whiteout conditions and what not. What I realized when I did this is that the truck will switch into 4x4 low range but I couldn't get it into the regular 4x4. It's a 2001 with 4x4 on the fly. I pop it in neutral at a complete stop, and pull the 4x4 stick back till it clicks into place for regular 4x4. I did this on my trip back and the low range light went on. I decided to put the stick into the 4x4 low range position and then back into the regular 4x4 position. Nothing changed until I put it back into 2wheel drive.
Just wondering if anyone can give me an idea on whats going on or if I should just bring it to my shop and get it looked at?

Unless the linkage is bent it is impossible to shift it into 4Lo by just pulling back on the lever. Are you sure it was actually in 4Lo? The engine would be screaming at highway speed in 4Lo, not to mention that the gear whine would be a give away too. If the low light came on and the t-case was in 4Hi it would indicate the the position switch on the t-case was defective.

Ok so in 4x4hi...
1. Is the 4x4 light on?
2. Do the front wheels have power?
In 4x4low you said the reduction is there so that means the transfer case is good, but
3. Do the front wheels have power?
List out those three answers and we can go from there.

Try this: Push the lever all the way to the right as far as you can then pull it back. It should move back and into 4Hi. To shift into 4Lo the top of the lever, ****, has to move over 10 inches. Is this what is happening?
You need to get under the truck while someone shifts into 4Hi. Check the movement of the linkage. Then shift into 4Lo and check again. There are 2 bolts, torx head, that fasten the linkage to the tranny. If one of those is loose or missing it may allow improper movement of the linkage. It is impossible for the linkage to move in the way you describe it unless something is broken or out of alignment.
