Rear End or Tansmission Clunk

I sometimes get a clunk sound when i am at a very slow speed then accelerate....its almost as if it is between gears or something...i though i had heard this was a problem....i am taking my truck in today and was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what the problem is and how it was fixed so i can explain it to the service shop today so they dont give me the run around....thanks

I've been hearing that everyonce in a while also. I'm hearing it more now that it is freezing cold out. Mine sounds like it's coming from the rear axel/differential area, but I spose it could be the transmission also. Let me know if you hear anything.

U-joints. I bet money on it. If you have to change one, u might as well change them both. They are not to diffcult to do more a pita cause u HAVE to do it.

SCotty!

Yep,I agree! My truck was in the shop 2 weeks ago to have the differential rebuilt.Come to find out,my almost 2 year old u-joints were bad along with my spider gears.By just replacing those defective parts the clunk is gone and the driveshaft is very tight now.BTW,they used Spicer u-joints!

Does anyone have the details on replacing these parts?

I have that same type of clunk coming from the rear of my truck as well. I like to do these things myself if possible, pocket the money I save on labor and spend it on my family instead.

I'll search the archives as well.

Thanks

To check the U-joints, park the truck on a level spot or block the wheels so it can't roll(safety reasons only). Put the transmission in neutral. Shake the driveshaft up and down, and twist it back and forth vigorously right near the U-joint as you watch (and feel) for any movement. Repeat this at all U-joints. I'll try to post this nifty way I learned to remove the old U-joints from the driveshaft later.
