Difference in 4R70W and E4OD?
 

Could someone please tell me why ford put different trannys in same vehicles? I bought filter for E4OD but now realize that my tranny is 4R70W. Why?

The 4R100 replaced the E4OD in '99, and was only used in heavy duty applications (Lightning, F-150 7700, and the more expensive optioned 5.4L with the tow package).

Basicly it comes to costs.

The 4R70W is the evolution of the AODE, which of course came from the AOD. The number in the modern models' names indicates the torque they're rated to handle, divided by 10. So a 4R70W (AOD) can handle 700 lb-ft, & an E4OD (4R100) can handle 1,000. Since the E4OD is one of the longest & heaviest (& expen$ivest) transmissions Ford ever made, it's totally reasonable for them to use the 4R70W in the lighter trucks with weaker engines.

So do they put the 4R70W up to the 4.6??

Yes, all 4.6L autos in the F150s are the 4R70W.
