Need help ASAP.

Tonight on my way home from school, I drove about 10 miles on the interstate and all was well. My trans. was shifting smooth as glass etc...I got off the interstate and was turning onto another road and while accelerating, my transmission slipped really bad for a second, then it shifted and it was fine until i hit 40mph then it completely went out of gear. I turned Overdrive off and the trans. felt a lot better. I got home and checked the fluid and it's a little low, could that be my problem or is it something more serious?

Also, when in O/D, shifting from 1'st to 2'nd took some really high rpms (no exact numbers atleast 3500)

Thanks again.

hmm.... Ill leave it to the experts, but I would top off the fluid, does it look burnt?

SlammaJamma 11-21-2006 08:51 PM

Burnt as in brown? Yup

Change it along with a filter.

UPDATE: I just noticed it won't go in Reverse...this is more than just fluid issues...it's gotta be.

so will the shifter go in R, it just wont engage?

Would help to know if you have the 4r70w or the 4r100, mileage on the trans, milage since the last fluid flush, and any power mods you have had done.

I'd say it's time for a big bill.

I couldn't find what transmission I have, is it in the Owners manual or on the Door sticker? I looked both places but i might have overlooked it? (its a 4.6L 4x2 automatic)

Anyways, it's got 101k on it...negative on the flush(havent flushed it yet). Only performance mod to the truck is exhaust, other than that it's all stock. (performance wise). I just think its kind-of random that it happened out of no where. But from what i hear/read transmissions seem to like to surprise people.

Also, Reverse just just wont engage, all the other gears engage except reverse.

The only auto with the 4.6L has been the 4R70W, so that's what you have.
You can flush it, but I don't think it will help. I think the direct clutch failed, and the trans needs to be rebuilt. Sorry.:(

I agree, save a lot of quarters... Sorry.

I'd say that's the cause.... Problem is now the damage is done, so changing fluid now probably won't help....

When you get your 'new' trans, make sure you have it serviced every year or 20k miles... Even if it's only dropping the pan, that's gonna go a lot further then doing nothing for 100,000 miles.....;) Cost is less then $100 at a trans shop. WAY cheaper if you do it yourself.... I do all my other fluid changes, but I HATE messing with the trans fluid.. I pay someone to drop the pan.. ;)Every other year, I have them drain the TC (I watch them do it). Sure it costs more, but it's worth it for ME... (no, it's not the local "Jiffy Lube" that does this either!!)

I tow a #5000 travel trailer all year long and my trans fluid is nice and 'clear' red, even when I have it serviced.... My trans has over 166,000 miles on it now and I've been towing with it for over 4 years....

Good luck!

Mitch

mitch is right, the first thing i ckeck when buying a car with a automatic is the tranny fluid condition, if that checks out well chances are it was well maintained all around.i had a 87 dakota with 265k when i got rid of it, tranny shifted smooth as glass, fluid and filter changes is all it ever had
