Fluid Change or Flush?

I bought my truck about two months ago and it now has 84,500 miles on it. The tranny fluid is a bit dark so should I just drain and refill, or flush it?

Also, I have heard a lot of people say to get the filter changed too, but doesn't Ford say never to change the transmission filter in the 4R70W?

Thanks.

Oh no man, change the filter, but not the pan gasket. I personally would change pans, using the ford gasket again, changing to the one with a drain plug. Regardless, you have to drop the pan to change the filter, but getting the old fluid out first as easy as possible, that's why I went to a drain plug. The filter should be less than 30 bucks too. Remember to drain the torque converter as well. I'm assuming you know how to check and do all the other stuff, but basically it's easy enough to do yourself and change the filter, not the pan gasket.

Why not just install a drain plug instead of replacing the pan?

That's what I did before, and I don't know what happened, but it started leaking bad through the plug. I'm thinking the pan's steel is too flimsy and thin to withstand any torque. I had to tighten the plug because it was always leaking some until one day- stripped. I don't know, I even heard ford has a steel replacement with plug. I just had a bad experience and got pist, so I bought a TCI aluminum with extra quart- solved that problem fast.

Keep cool guys!
Ford service departments do NOT change the filter. They usually do a complete replacement flush. This allows them to post lower cost of ownership numbers.
I do change my filter, and I can say that despite heavy duty use, lots of desert off roading, I have yet to see a speck of dirt in the old filter.
HOWEVER, I will continue to change the filter each time AFTER the flush.
Do yourself a favor and go to NAPA and buy the B&M drain kit. It's $8.95 and installs easily, makes changing things easier, and it is a safe bolt-together bung, with a separate pipe-thread drain like the torque converter.
Happy Motoring!

A bit touchy, are we? Not to mention immature (maybe you're just 13 or so...), and not very intelligent, either.

But other than that you seem like a fine person!

Your remarks further prove your lack of intellectual capacity.
