Confused...!

Hey all. I have a '97 with a 5.4 and 111,000 mi on the odometer. My truck shows an E code for the transmission in the door jam which I believe means I have an E4OD. Now, I have never touched a transmission and am very scared to but I want to change my fluid. I saw this episode of Horsepower TV and they changed out the transmission fluid with Royal Purple brand of oil and it made me want to do the same. So my question to you all is, what is the proper way to change out my transmission fluid? I was reading my Haynes repair manual and they say to drop the pan, change the filter and refill the transmission with 4 or so quarts of fluid. I thought there was like 14 quarts in my tranny? What is the proper way to change my fluid?

Yes you have the E4OD. And you should be on your third full flush by now. Search this section for tranny flush and you can see how to do it. Also, plain ole Motorcraft Mercon is what I would use if I were you. Do not use any fluid that is Mercon V or has a Mercon/Mercon V rating.
