I was towing an empty trailor (about 1000lbs), going down the interstate, when I lift off the throttle, the speedo jump up maybe 2-6mph. Then I started noticing that when the tach stayed the same, the speedo was jumping around. The light never came on again. I'm also getting the rough shifting and the transmission is hunting gears at low speeds. Also, after stopping (food or gas) it would shift fine for a few mins, then it'd go back to shifting rought.

I guess I'll drop it off at the dealer in the next week and see what the problem is. This is on a 97 5.4L 4x4 btw. Any opinions are welcome.
Your specific symptom indicates a failing Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).

I just saw Miranda Lambert Friday in Philly with George Strait. She was good. Her Kerosene video is kinda violent. She seems like too much of a rebel to have been on tour with him. Great concert though! 4 hours.

Well Friday was a fun day. The speedsenor gave out going down the interstate and all hell broke loose. I shoved her in neutral and moved to the side of the road and had it towed to my parent's house (where my autox car is). Well my step-dad towed it to a mechanic, the mechanic called today, the plastic gear on the tranny side was completely gone. I inspected the sensor gear when I replaced the sensor and it looked fine. We'll see what the total comes to later this week. Thanks again guys.
