Angry Learning or SOL?

Well guys, I'm back... after replacing my hydrolocked 4.2L engine I seem to be having transmission problems. It seems peculiar that the engine & trans would both go south simultaneously. Stepdaughter said there wasn't any problem shifting before the engine blew. It's an early 4R70w, build date of the truck 3/96. Symptoms; doesn't catch in any gear, forward or reverse, until given a little gas to up the RPM's. Shifts 1st to 2nd ok but no 3rd. Has been sitting idle since January. Could this just be in need of a flush & new oil/filter? Or maybe I didn't get all the electrical connectors seated fully when I reinstalled the trans? Or does the PCM need to relearn all the operating parameters to get back in sync? I have driven it less than 1 mile since getting it back together. I sure hope I'm not looking at a rebuild on the trans too!! "Bad luck is better than no luck at all" not sure anymore...

Thanks for your help...
Paul

Those symptoms sound like low fluid, a loose internal filter, or a dead trans. There is nothing to learn about going into gear. All that is learned is making it smoother. If it hasn't learned it could be bumpy going into gear, but not what you have.

+1, check the fluid and refer to my 'SMOKE!" thread here in the Trans forum.

Cool Just Remember

dont Know if You did this or not. But its a good Idea to get the computer code reset after getting all that done up. otherwise the on-board computer will be telling the Tranny that its still messed Up...that prolly wont help Your problem now. but it can prevent more in the future.

some info was wrong

Need to correct my initial post. :o My problem is not 3rd gear, it is the OD that is slipping. I did what the gentleman that wrote the TCCoA Transmission Article said on page 15... "put the shifter in position two at a higher speed like 50 mph" my engine RPM stays up and there is definite braking by the engine. That implies the OD band is still good. So, would my problem most likely be dirt or a bad electrical connection instead of something like a clutch or band inside?

Thanks again...
Paul
