Reading Dipstick

I'm kinda frusted guys. I check my transmission dipstick with the engine running after about 30 minutes of driving and it reads in the 'cold' section. I then decided to add another quart, shift thru all the gears, and the level still reads in the 'cold' section. After that, I add another 1/2 quart, and still reads in the 'cold' section. I don't get it. Am i inserting the dipstick wrong? Should the label on the handle, when inserted, read right side up? upside down? How much should the level of the dipstick rise per quart? Please help me out. Thanks.

I got the level to rise. I guess the 10 quart trans pan took alot longer to heat up to get the fluid to rise. I checked it after driving 20 straight miles.
