Not an E4OD (really an R70w) blinking OD light and reading code P0712

Ok, so I found out that code P0712 id for Transmission Fluid temp sensor Open or low input, but where is the senosr at external or internal to the tranny?

By the way its for a 01 5.4 SCREW 4wd

Thanks
Dwight

If you definatly have an e4od (4R100) the thermister is in the pan and is part of the solenoid pack, you can check the thermister by unpluging the trans plug and check the resistance between pin 7 and pin 8 gray/red wire and orange /black at the transmission resistance should measure between 597kand 1062k ohams depending on trans fluid temp also check each pin to ground should be open to ground if these values are ok check the wireing to the pcm.
the pcm pins are pin 37 orange /blue and pin 91 gray/red

Thanks Chuck,

Do you know the name for the part or part group I need before I drop the pan? Is it available from ford or will I need to get it from a tranny shop.

I'm fairly certain that it's a E4od. Do you know how to read the code?

Thanks again

I checked the door code and it reads "U" and as I have discovered on here that translate to an 4R70w. Does that still put the thermistor in the pan?

Thanks again
Dwight

Testing is about the same test between pin 2 gray red wire and pin 5 dark green/ black same resistances the part that has the temp probe is still in the pan but is a differant part. it is called the molded lead frame it is the piece of plastic that conects all the solenoids to the external conector it has wiring molded into it and clips on all the soenoids it also has the temperature thermister in it although it is viasable it is not repalcable you have to buy the molded lead frame assembly, the basic part # is 7G276

Chuck,

I'm a fairly talented wrench, but tranny's aren't my thing really. I do work on Gas Turbines for a living, but is this something that takes more than rocket science or is it a plug ang and play kind of thing?

Thanks
Dwight

My 92 has the E4OD too. The only time the light work is when the outside temp is about 20F. Then as the truck warms up the light blinks and then goes out. The OD button stil work. Just wondering what your thoughts are. Can you pull the codes out on an OBD1 computer for the tranny.

not an e4od but an r470w

1st off, I dropped the pan on the 4r70w tranny(while blessing the ford engineers that put that infernal mount so close to the pan) and I discovered a lot of debris on the magnet and a few pieces on the solenoid pack. Once I cleaned the unit it tested(ohm meter) satisfactory.

So I put in a new filter, drained the converter put the pan back on and it seems good to go after a 20 mile test drive(I was so pissed at dumping the fluid from the pan trying to wrestle it out that I forgot to install the drain plug though).

Damn you Ford engineers!

One put in a drain plug on the factory pan.
Two, move the damn crossmember back the 1/4 inch it would take to service the freaking thing right in the first place.

Brian, I'm not sure about reading OBDI codes, I use my Supertuner to read the codes on my engine.

Ford, while we're talking(if your listening). How can a simple plug in device make sooooo much more power and make the truck shift sooooooo much better that you can just program the darn thing that way from the get go. If soccer moms want to have a truck that shifts like a lincoln than build them one and let the rest of us drive trucks. Oh yeah you already do. SO WHATS YOUR PROBLEM.

Bottom line, if you don't already have a tuner in your truck and you want the performance of the pre soccer mom craze get a tuner.

Thanks for all you help
Dwight
