Shifter is hard to move

I have a 97 5.4 L 4x4 automatic transmission with about 92000 miles on it and I have a weird problem. When I shift into drive, reverse, or back into park,.....the shifter feels as if it's binding. It doesnt do it all the time, but it feels as if the shifter linkage is binding and it's not smooth. Can anyone point me into the right direction?

You did say automatic. Could be shift linkage. Crawl under and feel around and take a good look.

These trucks have problems in the column. I bet the housing for the shift rod has cracked and it's only a matter of time before it snaps.

About $100 if you do it yourself.
