Question New Shifter

I just got and read the instructions for the Hurst shifter and I have a question- It says to check the length of the shifter arm and if not withih 1/4in order this other part. Has anybody had to get the extra part? Are my odds that the shifter will drop in with problems/ Also the adjustable stops are on 2nd and3rd, I was under the impression that the stops were on 3rd and 4th. Thanks for any help! Jeff

Jeff,

You ordered the 5026? I was first sent the 5026. This was the issue:

You can see that on the factory shifter the lower shift lever (the one that is in the transmission) is shorter than the lower shifter on the Hurst set up. What I had to do is send back the 5026 and had the 5025 shipped out to me.

It's my understanding that the '97 and '98's will use the 5025. I believe that is was mid '99 model year that a change was made in the transmission. You really won't know if you have the right one untill you take the factory shifter out to compare it with the Hurst. I would think that if the truck were manufactured later, say in '99 rather than '98 to be sold as a '99, then the 5026 should be the right one. That's just my guess though. You really have to take the factory shifter out to see.

You should be able to get the factory shifter out enough to make the comparison but not make the truck unsuable. I think I posted a link to my install on an earlier thread of yours. If the 5026 isn't the correct one then you should be able to put everything back together so that you can continue to drive the truck untill the 5025 comes in.

I know it's a pain. I tried to get an answer from Hurst as to when the change was made but they didn't answer. It's one or the other though. I hope for your sake that it's the one that you already have.

As for the stops. I believe that the stops serve the 1-3-5 and 2-4-R. When I did the adjustment it seemed to effect the gears on that side of the shifter. I did the adjustments acording to the instructions and it's been working fine since.

Good luck!

I bought the truck in Aug'99 amd I belive it was made in April of '99 and yes I did get the 5026. I didn't know that a curve was designed into the shifter! Thanks, Jeff
