tranny slippage while stopping suddenly
tranny also slips on hills at very slow speeds. Every time it slips it only does it a few seconds. New fluid and filter change twice has not solved the problem. Fluid level is normal. It has an overdrive tranny. Never slips while at highway speed or kicking in the passing gear. Worse when engine is cold. Have put 5000 miles on this truck with the slipping conditions described above. Has not got any worse,but sure has not got any better. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Did you check the fluid? Maybe service it the filter could be clogged. Of course thats a sign that your tranny is toast.

As I stated in my post the fluid level is full and I have changed the fluid and filter twice which has not helped at all.

On second thought, I am not sure. I bought the truck from my aunt and it had a new filter and pan gasket laying in the front seat . I dont remember any gasket for the filter. The second time I replaced the fluid, I used the same filter. Let me pull it back down and see. There may have not been a gasket in the box. I will buy a new filter and start over. Thanks.

Did you use fomoco MerconV transmission fluid?
I used Citgo MerconV and have similiar nuisance The different formulation makes it more 'tractor' feeling, certainly not what it was before I drained trans, TC and cooler. Nearly impossible to get wheels to spin on dry pavement, even in turns from standing stop - but once to speed and it kicks down into passing gear has alot of tourqe and sets you back in the seat nicely... |
On the first changing, I used dexron lll because they no longer make dexron ll which came in it from factory. Second changing I used regular type F, but had the same slipping results. I washed out the filter the second time and blew it dry with shop air. I think my problem is the filter gasket missing as the other guy stated. Give me a few days and I will tear it down, redo it, and post back my results. Thanks. ( brickmason )

It is an aod do not use type F fluid, it varnishes terribly. Do not use mercon V because you do not need it. Use dexIII or Dex II and a red bottle of lubeguard.

So if it has a plug, I will drain the torque converter also to remove most of the type F. Are there any certain brand of fluid I should use for longer lasting results and performance? The lubeguard that you mentioned, what is the purpose of it. Is letting the vehicle sit for a prolonged amount of time with pan and filter removed and torque converter plug removed in the 6 oclock position give the best drainage results? I have another truck I can drive so extra drainage time is no problem. You guys have been a great help to me. Thanks. ( brickmason )

The filter gasket missing was the problem. No more slippage. Takes 1st and reverse quickly and shifts out smoothly. No problems now. Thanks for your expert advice! Brickmason |
