Never had a T-18 so i cant comment, but the M5OD is one nice tranny. The 97 pulled some big loads before I got the diesel, and the 92 go's boggin every chance it gets, and both problem free.

T-18 is only 4 speed but it is about indestructable. It was used in lots of different applications including some of the smaller international dump trucks. There are two versions for the international stuff a wide ratio and close ratio. The wide has a really low granny first gear. As for the fords I am not sure. Both have there merits. Personally I don't much care for the M5 because of the way the gearing stacked up. In my 88 with stock tires and 3:55's, first was really too low to take off in and second was too high most of the time. With a wide T-18, you would take off in 2nd most of the time. I think the wide one came in the 80's model ford pickups because after driving a scout with one in it, it really reminded me of the way my dads 83 f-150 was.

Hope that helps
