Auto to Man.
Auto to Man.
Hey guys, how much and how hard do you think it would be to put a 5 speed in m,y truck? right know its the auto and I would rather have a manual. Is it pretty much put it in, hang a pedal and go. How complicated would it be, or is it even possible. I know a guy who puts in new trannys all the time and is way chaeper on labor than anyone else, and I would have him put it in.
Thanks
Thanks
I love a challange.
The easy part is getting a flywheel, count the bolts on the crankshaft because there are 2 different styles. 6 or 8 bolt. You will need the clutch and hydraulics. New pedals. There is a clutch switch to tell the PCM when the clutch pedal is depressed.
I am not sure about the tranny mount. the AT and MT may be different. The drive shaft distance will have to be measured to be sure the shaft is the correct length.
Now the complicated part. Becasue the AT has a different harness and PCM you will have to over come the problems with PCM to tranny communication. I know that the vehicle speed pick up is from the ABS sensor ring on the rear diff for ther 99 5.4 but I am not sure for the MT. It may pick up off the tranny. I know on the 4x4 MT is is off the T-case.
The engine harness for the AT is different from the MT, mainly becasue of the tranny controls and input. I would recommend a Shop manual from Helms, Who publish for FORD, as they have the wiring diagrams as well as the powertrain control manual. The cheapest rebuilt Manual tranny is about 900 + core. Cost of clutch, clutch pedals and clutch/hydraulics excluded. You should look at a parts yard for a donor vehicle.
