I have an '01 Supercab 4x4 with the 4.6 and 5-speed.

On the 2 to 3 upshift, unless I'm careful and deliberate, I will scrape the gear a little. Shifting slowly there's no problem, but when you're in a hurry, and if you don't really think about it, it will grind.

Does anyone know if the '01 5-speed has a narrow gate on the 2/3 upshift, or does anyone else have this problem?

A friend suggested that it might be a synchro a little out of adjustment. The 2 to 3 change is the only gear to have this problem.

Any ideas?

 

Mine had the same symptoms twice. It eventually got worse with random grinding on 2-3 shift. Both times dealer said it was bad syncro. Tranny was replaced first time at about 20K miles and second time they replaced 2-3 syncro at about 35K miles.

Pretty common problem - if you search this forum you'll find a few stories.

its the syncro, and from all that ive gathered its a pretty common problem on these tranny's. Mine has it realy bad, but I dont feel like spending the time or money to fix it right now so I found out that if I double clutch whenever I shift from 2 to 3 it wont grind on me.
