Aamco MerconV Syn blend
 

On my last trans flush I used Aamco MerconV syn blend in my 97 4R70W.What are your opinions of this fluid?:help:

I used it in my last 2 fluid changes and will use it again in another 5k or so miles when it's due for another change. I've used it a total of about 75k miles with no problems. I have a '99 f150 5.4 with the 4r70w trans and I regularly tow a 3000# toy trailer or a 2500# boat. In the last change there was no dark or burnt fluid nor was there anything in the pan other than fluid and the normal 'fuzz' on the magnet in the bottom of the pan.

Yeah Ron,I was impressed with the way it took the slight shudder away from my trans.And the shifts are so much crisper too! I was just curious to see if others are having good luck with it.:rocker:

does Walmart sell this fluid? im going there to buy my Motorcraft oil.

Yeah I think it works good too. No issue with it as far as I'm concerned. I won't change brands unless I can't find it any more for whatever reason.

My local Walmart does not carry anything in the way of 'modern' trans fluids. If you need Mercon V around here you need to go to some place that actually knows what it is. I buy it at a place called Farm and Fleet. I'm not sure if you guys have any of those in your neck of the woods but we have several of them in the Midwest including one about 5 miles from here.

Another one to try is Pennzoil synthetic blend 'universal' ATF. It covers Mercon, Mercon III, Mercon V, etc. My neighbor has been using it in his 2000 F150 5.4 with the 4r70w. He's got almost 150k miles on his truck since he uses it for work. He's got the original trans in his and he has no problems either. If you can't find the Aamco maybe you can latch onto the Pennzoil. As I recall both of them are about the same price give or take 10-15 cents a quart or so. My Farm and Fleet sells the Pennziol too.

SVT,I got it at Autozone for $2.99 a quart.And you can get your filter there too.Have you ever changed the fluid in your truck?

ive never changed it but im assuming im going to have to when i switch out my valve body for Greggs FTVB. ill buy 14 quarts of ATF then? is that a safe bet?

Yeah,buy 14 then any left over you can use to flush your power steering and re-fill it.When you take the trans pan off there will be a little white lolli-pop looking plug with a black o-ring on it;just throw that away.Ford stuck it in the dipstick hole to prevent debris from getting in until they installed the dipstick.Also,while you got the pan off it would be a good idea to install a drain plug.Look thru this forum and you will see a member named AJRagno did a how-to on installing one.

whats the purpose of the drain plug?

is their a how-to anywhere on how to change the fluid?

When you remove the trans pan you will wish you installed a drain the next time you drop the pan!:mad:

but what exactly do i do? drill a hole in the pan and put the plug in the hole? i dont understand what to do. :bows:
