Smile 2001 F150, no 4X4L

2001 F150, xlt 4X4. I was driving down the highway pretty fast (65), and went to turn the a/c on. Instead I shifted the 4WD into 4X4Low. Now 4X4High works perfectly fine, but when I shift it into 4X4low, nothing happens (it remains in 4X4High). Could this be a simple fuse, or is there something that needs to be reset that is designed to protect the system from people like me?
Cheers for any help that you could provide.

It won't go into 4x4 low unless your in neutral movin slower than 3mph (or around that) and foot on the brake. It will go into 4x4 high though. When was the last time you used 4wd before this and when was the last time you used low? If it's been a while then it probably hasn't worked for a while. From what I've read here the electric motor that shifts the the tcase is known for failure. I'm not saying that's what is wrong here.

Yes checking the fuses is a good place to start. I have the MSOF, so no 4x4 by accident.

Prior to this incedent, 4wd low and high worked perfectly fine. Now 4wd high works fine, but when I shift it into 4wd low nothing happens (it remains in 4wd high). This is not a major problem for me, as 4wd high is what I would normally use all the time, I guess I'm just thinking for down the road when I sell it. If I can find out what protects the system, hopefully something that can be reset, that would be real nice. I'd be happy if I could fix this.

Well this is taken from my ford factory cd for my 97. I have no idea how much of this still applies to you 01 but I'm sure the general procedures are the same. Good luck. Also, is your 4low not working at all or just the light on the dash not coming on?

Just to be clear, you are trying to put in 4L with the transmission in neutral, foot on the brake, and completely stopped right?

Electronic shift will not engage 4L if the truck is not in neutral.

I doubt inadvertantly putting the switch to 4L would have caused the problem, if there is a problem, it was probibly already there and this caused you to notice it.
