adding a tranny cooler.

I'm getting ready for some towing next week with my '97 Expy 5.4l and will be putting in a tranny cooler tomarrow. Anybody done this before? I just thought I'd go off one of the lines off the existing 'lil cooler that's already there. Anyone got any advice before I start?

the existing"lil cooler thats already there" is most probably your power sterring cooler..if you don't know what to do ,my advice is to buy the cooler and let a reputable place put it on...not meant as a flame but you need to know which line is the line to tap into(bottom),what size adaptor fittings to use and then where to place the cooler and where to run the lines so they don't rub a hole in them in the middle of Wyoming

Funny you should say that, cause I towed through Wyoming last summer! That lil cooler looks to be the only auxilary cooler I have... if that's for ps, then the tranny cooler must just be integrated into the radiator? Good thing to know before I start pullin' hoses off!

Your expy has a factory transmission cooler. It's prolly the 3/8 QC fittings. Most of the tranny coolers are fin and tubes, which don't really work that well, but if you go to a tranny shop try to find one that has a real radiator, give me a day and I'll get you a manufacturer and part number. I sell one that has fittings and braided stainless lines already, I get $125 for it.

Thanks for the replies... What I was planning is I have just an aftermarket one from NAPA that I was going to put in to supplement what I've already got. Should be no big deal... right?

no..just run through the radiator cooler first to take the heat off and then through the cooler and back to the tranny..oversizing it won't hurt a thing

go flex a lite or de rale or TCI and if you want to spend some extra for better get the cooler with the fan attached..great for the rush hour traffic in Cheyyene

Upon closer exam... the lines go in and out of the radiator, then in and out of another, small cooler (~6"x4")...
I'll just put this one in between the two. Of course the fitting is different than the one they supply with the kit!

I'm gonna be towing my '63 travel trailer up to Banff next week! Wave if you see me... and stop if you see me disabled on the side of the road!

Question Auxiliary Cooler Recommendation?

Can anyone recommend a good auxiliary transmission cooler? I've seen some at TruckPerformance.com manufactured by B&M for decent prices. I've also been to Mike Troyer's site and saw his transmission cooler with a fan.

I'm trying to find one that works well and fits where the stock one sits now. I called the local dealer and found out the dimensions of the existing cooler: 270x117x50mm (10.6"x4.6"x2.0"). Are the B&M coolers good (better than stock), and is Mike's worth the 200+% price increase to get the fan?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Well, it's in! No leaks either! It's a universal... from NAPA. Of course it's not until you get home and see in the directions that you need a special kit for certain types of Fords, Jeep, and something else!
Probobly don't even need it but better safe than sorry!
