first time towing with our 2015 5.0

We just got back from towing a 4500 lb enclosed 24' car trailer stuffed with a 4000 lb show car to Hershey and back(about 400 miles) with a 5.0, tow package and 3.55 rear and trailer brake. NO problem. Towed it with 3 people and luggage too for a total of 9000 lbs. Did not break a sweat. Even on the inclines with ac on it did it in 4th gear. On the flats back up to 6th gear. Love this Truck.Got 10 mpg too with the ac on! |
Sounds as if you had a fun trip. Glad to hear the 5.0 performed so well

Thanks.. The sway was kinda bad when we got passed by semis and RV's but we kept it at 60-65 mph and stayed in the right lane and it was fine.

Bad sway can be caused by improper trailer loading - too little tongue weight.
Do you have the factory brake controller and a weight distribution hitch with antisway? |

You NEED a WD hitch, period. The factory hitch is only rated to 5000# without it. Get a good one with antisway bars.

Yeah, you really need to use a basic WD hitch at the minimum with that load.. I use one with just a #5000 travel trailer... Makes all the difference in the world...

I'm not sure if anyone has seen or heard of my adventure , trying to discover why that dang sticker is on the receiver limiting the WC capabilities of said receiver. In BC, I've worked with the CVSE, RCMP and both the local Ford Dealer and Ford of Canada.
In this case, I'm dealing with my equipment trailer that is almost 7000 lbs GVW with a tongue rating of around 850 lbs. I had an email from Ford of Canada basically telling me that the sticker with that limiting WC rating is there to protect the truck, NOT to be legal. The hitch will handle the WD rating without a WDH IF you are within the rated weights of your truck. Those are the weights to stay within....Ford told me. The CVSE physically went over my rig and said I was legal although I have about 850 lbs of tongue weight with no WDH. Same with the RCMP whom also looked at the setup. CVSE stated straight up..they ignore that sticker (it was written by lawyers)...they only care about the door sticker. I have ZERO sway or instability with my truck , doing 60 mph ....hands off , even when a tractor trailer unit passes me. The ride is awesome and comfortable. Now, in saying this...I DO use a WDH for our 22' , 5000 lb and a 700 lb tongue weight. Not so much for weight distribution but for sway stability. The difference between the two is how I can load the trailers. The equipment trailer allows me to park the tractor exactly where I want it to be AND the load is quite central to the trailer axles . It also has a very low center of gravity with minimal frontal area. The TT is the opposite., large frontal area ....dispersed loading....and acts like a sail.
