DMI bumper

Hey All"

Looking at buying a mid 90s F-250. I'm looking to buy it to tow a car and open trailer.

It has a DMI spring loaded bumper on it. I've never seen anyone tow a car trailer with one of those. Is it possible to use this, or would I have to yank it off and buy a conventional bumper and hitch?

I couldn't find a website for DMI, so I am unable to really find out what this bumper is for. I've been told it's a "farm bumper" good for "gravity wagons" but I don't know what the hell that means. Gravity wagons sounds like something out of the Jetsons.

Any help appreciated

Steve

I don't see why you couldn't use it to tow a car trailer. We used to put DMI bumpers on our farm trucks years ago but not anymore. We pulled livestock trailers, wagons, etc.

This is a gravity wagon (or gravity box).

Install a conventional frame mounted hitch receiver. Don't try to tow anything with a bumper unless it's just at slow speeds around a farm or something.

DMI bumpers are frame mounted. You would be crazy to use a plain bumper hitch to pull farm equipment or anything else for that matter.

Here is a link to the new DMI bumpers: http://www.unitedtruckparts.com/products/QuicCushn2.htm
Tow 14,000lbs with up to 1400lbs tongue weight.

For clarification, when I said conventional bumper and hitch, I meant conventional bumper and frame mounted hitch. Don't worry, not planning on towing 5K+ pounds with a bumper hitch.

Jrvichammer: Why did you stop using the DMI bumpers?

Thanks

We just didn't have a need for them anymore. The only thing we pull off the hitch anymore is anhydrous tanks. Everything else is fifth wheel or too big to be pulling behind an F350. We have a Peterbilt's and a low boy for the big stuff.

Sorry about that - I didn't know what a "DMI" was and I saw "spring loaded bumper" and thought that didn't sound too good.

I can't figure out how you'd get the ball on the thing. Its just got two vertically parallel flat tabs of steel sticking out the back like a pin is supposed to go through there or something.
