Towing weights with different models?

I'm wondering why the max rated towing load changes for different models of truck. For example(these values are taken from a Trailer suppliers catalog) the F150 reg cab 4.2 v 6 is rated for 3500 lbs, the 4.6 v 8 is rated for the same load, woudln't a larger engine be able to tow more, or is the engine not the limiting factor here?

Also the econoline van 4.2 v6 engine is 5000 tow, and the 4.2 v6 is 3500 in the f150 reg cab, what made the change there?

I'm wondering because I'm hoping to tow a 5000 lb load in my f150 4.2 v6 (2000) and would rather understand why I'm not able to instead of just accepting it.
Cheers

Biggest factor is rear end gear ratio, but body style and drivetrain (4x4 or 4x2, auto, manual) factors into it as well.

It really matters what your GCWR is too. I've seem 'em as low as #9000 to over #13000. It's all based on the above as well.

Hope that helps some........

GCWR?
The rest helps though, thanks bud. Any idea what the safety factor is on those numbers? I'm rated for 3500, but with a 2.5 safety factory, I could carry 5000 easy.

It stands for Gross Combined Weight Rating. That's the max your truck and trailer can weigh together. GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the max amount your truck by itself can weigh when fully loaded (including payload or tongue weight).

Well, I looked here tow specs and I see now what you are talking about.

A reg cab 4x2 w/4.2 manual trans, 3.55 gears only has a GCWR of #7800 and max tow of #3500 but a reg cab 4x2 w/4.6 manual trans, 3.55 gears is the same!

Seems like it's the manual trans that is the limiting factor because the same setup with an auto trans has a #10000 GCWR and a max tow of #5700 for the 4.2 and #11500/#7100 for the 4.6.....

Anyway, you have to remember, those max tow ratings assume you don't go over either your GVWR or GCWR on the truck. Those max tow #'s are taken from subtracting the GCWR from the 'curb weight' of your model of truck.

You can probably get away with towing a #5000 trailer for a little while, but you'll tear up the drive train pretty fast IMO.....

Good Luck!
