2000 ford f150 torsion bar question

Trying to remove the crossmember to gain access to the transfer case.Looking into chiltons repair manual it says to jack up vehicle and loosen wheel lugs before removing torsion bars, just wandering the purpose of this when i have seen other examples of them just sliding out without the vehicle be jacked up.All feedback on this will be greatly appreciated

You don't have to loosen the lug nuts. Just take all the weight off the front.

I highly doubt you've seen examples of anyone removing torsion bars without the vehicle being jacked up; the torsion bars are the items that support the weight of the entire vehicle like a coil spring or leaf spring on other vehicles. It is quite unlikely you could even physically get them out with the weight of the truck on them anyways, so probably not much danger there. As stated, no need to loosen lug nuts or remove the wheels, just jack it up by the frame so the wheels are fully exteneded and hanging free.
