SAS swap
 

Okay guys first of all don't bash me for this post. I'm looking to straight axle my expedition but I don't intend to make it 4wd. Possibly in the future but no time soon. I'm looking to straight axle in order to run bigger tires in the future without running into problems with the IFS. I plan on getting a dana 44 since I need nothing major since it will always strictly remain a street truck. My question is what all do I need in order to make my truck a straight axle. I want to run coil springs still in the front in order to maintain a decent ride quality. Basically if someone could possibly send a link or parts list of what all I will need in order to achieve this. All help is appreciated. I plan on doing this with family members as we feel we have enough knowledge with welding measuring etc. If it gets out of control though, taking it to a shop is also a possibility. Thanks!

i say we just trade then u could do and straight axle swap to mine and be true 4x4 haha

radius arms or 4 link it, need a track bar that will keep it from moving side to side what you should do is go find a truck with a dana44 and look at the setup you can tear everything off of that and use it on yours if you can do the fabrication like you said

Isnt the dana 65 the f350 front axle? Why not just use one of those? Running leafs up front would give you a decent ride, but having the coils with some kind of dual shock set-up on either side would be awesome too. I think that you would need some kind of trac bars to keep it straight and you would have to figure out how to make a coil perch or modify your current one. Then you would have to rig up some kind of custom shock set-up. Just buy a complete f350 axle off of craigslist or something and clean it up. There isnt that much else to it I wouldnt think, if you arent going 4wd.

After some more research it seems like a coil spring setup is going to be pretty tough. I've been talking to Klitch on what he thinks would be a good setup. I'm looking for something similar for 38s or 40s. Most likely leaf springs if I can figure out everything that needs to be done depending on how tough this project will be.

Leafs will def be the easiest and most cost effective route. Also talk to trimble about going about doing your sas. You could also give a shout to jesse at farmboy fab, he's the expert at this.

Making sure everything is going to fit is going to be the fun part, trust me. Since it is the front, you also have to deal with the steering system, because the leaf spring suspension might get in the way, along with a few other bumps and bruises.

I've mentioned Hi-steer arms to him already if he opts for leaf sprung. Coils will have its potential advantage but also requires more handy work.

Where's he moving to now? Didn't he just setup shop down in south FL a couple yrs ago?

Leafs will be the easiest but will ride the roughest. You could do a 4 link with coilovers and a dana 44 fairly easy if you have money to burn. The middle of the road would be a radius arm setup with a trac bar and coil springs similar to the superduty. All options will take time and quite a bit of money. Is your expy 4wd or only 2?

Its 2wd. Seems like something way over my head and possibly more money than its worth. I was thinking for the long run it would be a good decision to do it but maybe I'll just sell it and start over with a newer f150. Just some things to think about, dropping a grand or so on this or possibly trading for an f150 or keeping mine the way it is. Not sure if I have that much mechanical skill or patience to tear it down and SAS.
