4.56's or 4.88's (37's)
 

Getting my 8in Rize installed in a couple of weeks.

Will have Kmc Hoss 20's w/ 37's.


Should I go with 4.88's or 4.56's

This will see mainly highway.

i would go with 4.56's if its mostly on the highway, now if you tow often, then i'd go 4.88's. the mileage numbers wont be much different between the 2

I'd go with 4.88's, but a lot depends on how you use your truck and what powertrain combo you have. Do you tow/haul a lot? Do you do a lot of interstate driving?

the difference in rpms at highway speed is so minimal it wont make a difference what you pick. go with 4.88's, the extra bottom end will be nice. for instance, if you put in 4.56 and your driving in OD (i.e. on the highway) with an rpm of 2200 (i pulled this number out of thin air just because its a typical rpm to cruse at) and then you decided to switch to 4.88's, the rpms for the same mph would go from 2200 to 2354.........the difference would be 154rpm different. your stock tach isnt even accurate enough to read that small of a change.

dont let anyone tell you that 4.56 is better for the highway then 4.88, the difference in rpm is almost non existent. anyone who says that 4.56 is better for cruising simply has not done the math or doesnt understand how to. i am giving you facts, not opinion 4.88 FTW! i run 4.88 with 35" tires and i wish i had done 5.13 (my truck is 2wd so i can do 5.13) eventually ill probably change


and just so you dont thing im making this up the equation used to figure out the rpm changes was a/b=c/d

4.88's sound like the way to go. The rears cost a little more.:(

I do minor towing. Car hauler, etc.

I was just making sure I went in the right direction. After I get the Rize installed I plan to have the gears put in.

I have a local guy that knows his stuff with gears.
He is going to install them for 400 cash.

Finally someone speaks the truth about gearing!! Lucky13 is exactly right. The difference in mileage between 4.56's and 4.88's is null. Don't let anyone tell you that "4.56's are good the highway". If that were true, does that mean that 4.10's would be better?? What about just keeping 3.73's??

What people need to understand is that even the jump from 3.73's to 4.88's isn't THAT much of a difference...... Even with STOCK tires, and 4.88's, your truck would still run down the interstate at 80mph just fine. This whole myth of low gears hurting your top end is just a bunch of poop. Don't believe me? Next time you're doing 80, press the little button that cancels overdrive. You basically did the equivalent of swapping your 3.73's for 4.88's. Even with that much of a change, the truck barely notices the difference. 4.88's and 37's would almost the the same as 4.10's with stock tires.

So if you do like Lucky13 says and go with the facts...... it's a no-brainer
Fact 1: 4.88's will give you more power
Fact 2: With 37's, in overdrive, at cruising speed, you (or your truck) won't be able to tell the difference in RPM

I have 4.88s dont even waste your time with anything smaller, and i do alot of highway and city. works great for both

At 70 mph I'm running at 2100 rpm on the highway

Well I got the 4.88's from 4 wheel parts yesterday. Will be installing them this Friday. Lift should be delivered on Monday. By next weekend I might just have it all done.:rocker:
