question about running 37's

if i am going to get the rize 8 inch kit and run 37's on my truck (a 2008 f150 4x4) i would think i would need to re-gear. but i think that is alot of money. is there other ways around that. like i have heard about the edge evo tuner, would that solve the problem without having to re-gear. thanks for your help guys.

no, there is NO way around regearing. w/ 37'' tires, you will eventually blow the transmission. if you then proceed to rebuild it w/o regearing, you will be on your way to blowing it again. i speak from knowledge backed by the personal experiences of friends of mine. an edge tuner isn't worth a sh*t for one, and for two, computer adjustments cannot be made to compensate for the realized increase in your gear ratio due to the oversize tires.

also, a rebuild is ~$2000 on an automatic transmission. that is still more expensive than regearing.

yup, re-gear. I'df also suggest losing the stock LS (if you have it) and upgranding to a clutchless Limited Slip differential. Will help in traction over the long run.

Looks like you'll be needing some 4.88's here soon ! post up some pics when its all said and done

thanks for the info. do you know how much $ it is for a regearing? and what gears should be put in?

minimonster17 Jun 30, 2008 06:38 PM

on a 4WD truck you have to do BOTH axles, hence the increased expense. expect to pay around $1500 for a quality job. you would be best going w/ 4.88's, front and rear for your intended application. like MT posted, you may also look into replacing your stock limited slip.

Remember to tell em your front gears are 8.8" IFS axle with Reverse cut gears.

$1500 is about average, and you going to need a new carrier in the rear if you go with the 4.88's I believe, so, perfect chance to get an upgrade with either a clutchless LS, or a locker. So, your probably looking at closer to $2,000

Definately go with 4.88's .

No problem ! Its what this site is for ! Glad your doing it right too. The gears is definately a "hidden" expense a lot of people don't consider before hand.

Make sure to post up some pics once its lifted and lookin purdy !

Yes, 4.88s are going to be needed. This is coming from a guy that tried to get by with 3.73s and 37s. The 4.88s will help save your transmission. It takes a lot of the load off of it. Also, don't waste your money with the Edge. I'd go with a custom tuned Xcal2 from VMPTuning.com. I also bought the Edge and had numerous problems with the tuning. My torque convertor would violently lock and unlock around 65-72 mph, it was horrible as well as other things.

hey so what happened when you did not re-gear your truck. did you end up blowing your transmission?

minimonster17 Jul 1, 2008 12:22 PM

it was probably vastly underpowered, and shifted very irregularly. like i said, eventually the trans will fail if you do not regear.

Like minimonster said. The truck was a slug, it shifted sloppy, it was only a matter of time before something gave out. Got to remember that's a whole lot of rotational mass compared to a stock tire and wheel.

yea it is. a lot of lift shops have told me you dont have to re-gear. but then i have had some that have told me you do have to. i guess that shows the quality of the shop haha
