I installed 285/75/16 M/T MTX's on 8" rims with no problem at all . I've since add 2.5 inches on lift and plan on adding 3 more!

I just got a 4" Rancho lift put on and it has 285's and I would say you would have turning problems if you did it with no lift. The 285's are slightly taller than a 33 but about 1" smaller in width. I put them next to a set of 35's before I had them put on to see if I wanted to go bigger and the 285 did not look much different in how tall it was. It is a big tire.

Here's how it goes. A BFG 285 is 32.8" tall, and the exact same height as a 33/12.50/16.5. Only difference is, that the 33 is wider. I have 285's on my truck with a 4" lift, and I don't think they are close to 35's.

Hey Mudder,

We had the 285's next to the 33's and they were, not much, but slightly larger. Atleast they looked it. and next to the 35's they did not look that different but of coarse they were smaller. The 35's would not add that much more to the trucks overall hight.

By the way thanks for the info on the lift. You are one of the reasons I went with the 4" Rancho.

Question

By the way Steve, do you have any pics of your truck yet? Would love to see how it looks.

Hey mudder your right. The 285 75 16 are 32.83. We did the calculation. I don't have the pictures developed yet. No I don't have a digital camera yet. I will have pictures soon. I had two guys in trucks stop me on the way home from getting the lift on and say how good it looks.

Our trucks are very similar except mine has the different front end (1999). Black always looks good....for the little time it is clean.

Yes, mine are on stock rims. But if you get aftermarket rims, get some with no more than 4.5" of back spacing, get 4" if you can. It will prevent rubbing if you got to a bigger tire and will probably look better than the stock rims. But the stocks will work.
