The skinny on 4.6L S'Crews
Ok, I've read from the 5.4L S'Crew owners about how much they love their engines... but what about the 4.6L owners? I'll be putting about 60 miles a day on my truck, in and out of the city, but most of that on a good stretch of highway at about 65-70 MPH. I'm not gonna race the truck, nor am I going to tow anything bigger than a bass boat, and I'd like to save on MPG. Well 4.6L owners.... I'd appreciate your input.

Don't get the 4.6, get the 5.4 it's not much more money and you'll be glad you got it. Your gonna love the 5.4 pulling your bass boat, plus the mpg is about the same, because the 4.6 has to work so much harder to move that 5,100 pound monster of a truck. PLEASE don't get the 4.6. It downshifts on the slightest upgrade. Get the big boy https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif

I test drove the 4.6L and 5.4L SCrews and was impressed with the 4.6L so that is what I ordered with my new SCrew. After driving my new SCrew the past few days in the City, I have no regrets at all. It has a lot of pick up and go with plenty of pedal left. I can't wait to break the engine in to get it's full potential. I just filled up my SCrew for the first time and checked my mileage. Using regular unleaded with under 220 miles on the engine and trip meter, it came to 14mpg City.
The only mods I have done so far is adding a High Flow K&N Filter the second day owning the SCrew. I plan on installing a Flowmaster 50 or 70 series in the next month or so. Overall, I plan on doing the same in regards to towing. I plan on pulling a 27' ft boat and haul some 4-wheelers around at the most. Good luck and enjoy! https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif ------------------ F-150 SuperCrew, XLT, 4X4, 4.6L, Ox. White, Med. A 27 foot boat? That is a big darn boat!
I bought my 5.4L a few weeks ago and decided that I had to have the 5.4L for my sanity. Grumps, being a bass fisherman, you can relate to this -- How many times do you wish you'd gotten the bigger motor on your bass boat, or maybe a little bigger boat? Hell, it wasn't a week after I got my boat that I wasn't thinking.... hmmmm for a little bit more I could have gotten what I really wanted. To eliminate this problem, I just bought the 5.4L to start with. Will I need the extra power, who knows, but I'll sleep better knowing I have it. As the ol' saying goes.. "It is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!" BTW - I am getting 14 MPG on my truck with a little over 1000 miles on it in all city driving. Haven't had it on the open highway for any real amount of time to get a feel for what this is like! Good luck... Regardless what engine, you will still have a great looking truck! ------------------ 2001 F-150 S'Crew Lariat 4x4 Oxford White w/ silver accent (two-tone) 5.4L V-8 skid plates rear-slip graphite leather (60/40 bench) Husky liners Jason Dimension tonneau cover w/ skid mat in the bed |
rasch,
yep, it's pretty big. One of my buddies pulled his 27' SeaRay with his tiny S10. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen. Just wished I took a picture of it. I figured since he didn't have too big of a problem towing it for about 15 miles, I shouldn't have a problem pulling it on mine. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif [This message has been edited by Chuck_TX (edited 03-14-2001).] |

Now wait a minute here..... I want to thank those with the 4.6L who reply... but to those of you with the 5.4L... I already know what you're going to say. I only want to hear from the 4.6L owners who may have regrets, or may not. You see.... I have a Ranger now, with the smaller engine... my wife has an Explorer... with the smaller engine. We love both of these vehicles. I'm not a motor head; just a big guy who fits better in a truck. The only problem I heard about the 4.6L (from someone that had one) was that it downshifted on mountain roads (of course I have to wonder if the guy turned off the overdrive.... which may have been the problem). So, you know what I do, what I need and what I've had.... not to be grumpy.... but 4.6L owners need only apply to this one.

Grumps
I have a 4.6 and tow a 6500 lb. boat every weekend. I can't say I don't wish I had the 5.4 sometimes, but not enough to make me regret the 4.6. I put 30K miles a year on my rig and appreciate the saving at the pump, the $800.00 up front didn't factor into my choice. In regards to the O/D Hunting, take it out of O'D or buy the chip. The chip made a HUGE difference in towing and shifting. I have two friends w/ 5.4's and without towing they say they can't tell the difference under normal driving. Greg |

Your post was LOL funny Raoul -- thanks for keeping this board lively. Grumps, While I have the 5.4L (it is great), I have a friend who owns the 4.6 and loves it as well. The only problem he has ever really complained about was merging onto the highway and passing power (especially with something in tow). Hope this helps. Regards |
i pull my bass boat with 4.6 no problem at all
how about some fish picture from us bass fisherman fish on !!!!! |
Geez! "I can pull my Bass Boat w/my 4.6 no problem". Give me a break!! I could pull a bass boat w/a Schwinn uphill on black ice w/no problem. I've been pulling a 3500 lb. boat off the bumper of my 91 Explorer w/a 4.0 litre V-6 for ten years now without a problem. It now has 232,000 miles on it. There is no reason whatsoever to not get the largest engine available in any vehicle you buy. That way you don't have to wonder if anyone has any reason they wished they didn't. If you needed an excuse to get the larger engine, go buy a real boat!

Thanks Greg, and to all the 5.4L owners who did reply, I didn't mean to come off so rude. I've been pouring over this site and others for the last week and it's been a great help. I originally ordered an XLT S'Crew as the ones in the lot had the rear headrests, and the leather seaters did not. Then I learn here that it's a Gen I, II v. III thing, so I modified my order for a Lariat. I'm not a big engine guy as I said in a prior post and was just looking for legitimate beefs about the 4.6L engines. I too will be putting around 30K miles a year on this thing, so the MPG will definately add up. I like driving a truck to the city (which I do every day) as people are less likely to mess with you.... must think you're on your way back from hunting or something... and you don't get cut off or pushed around on the road as much. Quite frankly, I probably won't end up towing much and I don't need to be the fastest rig on the road. I want something big that will do the job, but not cost me extra at the pump.... so I think I've got to go with the 4.6L. I am intrigued by this "chip" talk and the air-intake thing-a-ma-bob... but as I also said before... I'm no motorhead, so continued instruction in this regard would be most appreciated. Thanks again for all the replies.... even those big engine guys.
Now as for spending 31K.... who's spending that? Don't you all get it at invoice minus rebates? ********************************************* Lariat 4X4, 4.6L, Black Clearcoat, Medium Graphite, Limited Slip, Cab Steps, Skid Plates, Sliding Rear Window, Trailer Tow Group, CD w/ 6 Disk Changer |
Sorry I mis-posted. It's late, past my bedtime. I ride a Diamond Back Lakeside, not a Schwinn!

I've had a 4.6l in my Screw for almost one year. No freeway driving, lots of hills. I have often questioned whether I should have got a 5.4 but feel that the 4.6 is fine with me as I don't tow anything. I think really the engine is fine but the transmission with the Ford engineered "soft shift" is the problem. I think the best solution is the Superchip (somedaysoon)as it gives a little extra power but it gets rid of the horrible shifting program. Incidentally when I pass someone on our narrow roads it certainly powers up and goes but needs a faster downshift, the engine is fine after the shift occurs. My original reason to buy the 4.6 was the reliability reputation of the engine (at the time piston slap was a concern for the 5.4 but this seems no longer to be an issue) My mileage for the year (hills, small highways and living at 800feet and commuting to town at sea level several times a day) is 15.9.
