1stnuford,
I am about to purchase a superchip, and I would appreciate it if you could send me any of the useful notes about installation. (Wrench sizes, etc.)
Thanks a bunch!!!

I recently towed a heavy load for an extended period for the first time since installing the Superchip. It makes a big difference. You can definitley feel the extra torque and HP under these circumstances. I was towing a 21-foot boat loaded with gear and wet. The truck bed was also loaded to the gills and there were five people in the cab. I estimate I was loaded with close to 6500 lbs.

Before the Superchip, I got about 10 MPG, towing a heavy load. After the Superchip, it was 11 MPG on the dot. It's not a huge difference, but, every little bit helps with today's gas prices.

Hi LRM,

Very interesting post. I really didn't think you'd see a mileage gain towing that much weight, so picking up a full 1.0 mpg is very good under those circumstances.

There are some load situations when the engine is just having to work too hard to really get much of a mileage gain from the Superchip, so I was very happy to see that towing over 3 tons you still saw an improvement there, that's excellent!

Have fun,

OLE MISS; DON'T HAVE UR E-MAIL ADDRESS. BUT HERE'S A QUICK REF FOR ALL WITH OFF ROAD PKG.
5/16 SOCKET FOR BATTERY CABLES.REMOVE AND LIFT OFF BATT TOP COVER. LIFT OUT BATTERY. 1/2" SOCKET TO REMOVE 4 BOLTS HOLDINT BATT TRAY TO FENDER AND FENDERWELL.POS CABLE IS ATACHED TO TRAY. JUST SLIDE TRAY TOWARDS MOTOR, OUT WAY.BEHIND TRAY IS THE COMP HARNESS. 10MM SOCKET TO LOOSEN AND PULL OUT HARNESS.THAT'S IT UNDER THE HOOD.
INSIDE PASS SIDE, UNDER DASH TO RIGHT, KICKPANEL,IS THE COMPUTER.STUFF A RAG INTO THE OPENING UNDER COMPUTER/OVER THE KICK PLATE TO PREVENT DROPPING ANYTHING INTO THAT OPENING. YOU KNOW SOMETHING WILL IF YOU DON'T!PULL BLACK RETAINING CLIP STRAIGHT OUT.
PULL COMPUTER OUT A LITTLE TOWARDS THE DRIVERS SIDE AND THEN TO YOU. I MARKED THE UNIT WITH A MARKER FOR EASE IN RE-INSTALL.(FENDERSIDE,FIREWALL IN,ETC. WHATEVER U WANT TO HELP PUTTING BACK IN)
I REMOVED THE COVER BOLTS FOR EASE IN CLEANING. 7/32 SOCKET TO REMOVE THE 6 BOLTS. CAREFULLY CLEAN THE CONTACTS.PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AND PLUG IN THE S-CHIP. PULL OFF THE BLACK COVER FIRST! MY CHIP HAD AT LEAST A 1/4' GAP AFTER INSTALL. I PUT A FEW DABS OF CLEAR RTV TO SECURE AND PREVENT ANY UNWANTED VIBRATION PROBS,ETC.HARDEST PART WAS LETTING IT SIT THERE AND SET UP A LITTLE! NOW, THE RETAINING BRACKET MOUNTED INSIDE HAS A LIP TO HELP SECURE THE COMPUTER TO IT. IT INTERFERE WITH THE RE-INSTALL! TAKE THE TIME TO REMOVE THE BRACKET AND BEND/FLATTEN OUT THE TOP 2 LIPS.TAKES A 5/16" SOCKET TO REMOVE 2 BOLTS. THEY ARE ALSO GLUED IN TO PREVENT MOISTURE, SO I HAD TO WRENCH THEM COMPLETELY OUT. FINGERS JUST WEREN'T STRONG ENOUGH. AND IT'S AVERY TIGHT FIT WITH YOUR HANDS. IT HELPS IF U HOLD UR MOUTH JUST RIGHT AND SAY A FEW CHOICE WORDS DURING THIS! RE-INSTALL THE BRACKET AND PUT THE COMPUTER BACK IN. LINE IT UP WITH THE FIREWALL OPENING AND SLIDE IT IN AND OVER TO THE BRACKET. PUT THE CLIP BACK ON, A LITTLE LOWER THAN WHERE IT ORIGINALLY WAS. THEN BACK UNDER THE HOOD TO CAREFULLY/LINE UP AND REMOUNT THE HARNESS AND 10MM BOLT. THE TRAY,BATTERY,COVER AND CABLES. AND TIME TO CRUISE !! I NOTICED A FEW STRANGE DOWNSHIFTS THE FIRST COUPLE MILES AND THEN ALL WAS FINE. DEFINITELY NOTICED DIFFERENCE PULLING OUR BOAT. AND THEN W/O A LOAD, IT'S ALSO A DIFFERENCE. BIGGEST PROB IS KEEPING FOOT OUT THE THROTTLE !! MAN, THAT FORD WANTS TO PLAY !! ANYWAY, MOST OF THIS IS IN THE INSTRUCTIONS FROM SUPERCHIP. IT'S CLEAR THEY HAVE DONE THE HOMEWORK. DON'T HESITATE TO CALL MR. WIZARD, AKA MIKE TROYER. VERY INFORMATIVE AND HELPFUL. I LEARNED A LOT.
OK, I'M DONE. SORRY FOR ALL THE WIND FOLKS. JUS CAN'T HELP IT !! I'M A HAPPY CAMPER.......

Well, I've had my SuperChip in for about 2000 miles in my brand-new SCrew 4x4 5.4L. My mileage has been monitored carefully, and I am getting 14.25 City and 16.25 Highway mpg, about the same as before I put in the chip. The truck does seem to accelerate smoother and shift better, but the difference is subtle and not obviously noticeable. I ran about 75 MPH on a recent trip to Florida, mostly interstate, and got 16.25 MPG. I have about 2500 miles on the truck so far, and also run a K&N filter and synthetic oil.

I'm not exactly overwhelmed by the performance difference. Maybe you notice it more if you have a lighter, faster 2WD. I'll leave it in for awhile longer, then I may take it out and run the stock chip again to see if I can tell the difference. I have another long road trip coming up - from Ga to Ohio and back for the National Rifle Matches.

I really was hoping I would get the "one or two more MPG", but 0.25 is better than nothing, I suppose.

1stnuford-

Please turn your 'CAPS LOCK' key off. In the online world, capitals imply that you are yelling.

Thanks

Hi Ramblin Wreck,

Your Super Crew is gaining the same amount of power as every other 5.4 Superchip for the 1999 & newer 260 hp 5.4, but you are absolutely right about the weight being a factor!

Ultimately, it's always your power-to-weight ratio that determines basic overall performance, and with well over 6000 lbs., adding 10% more peak horsepower is not going to make a night-and-day type of difference, though you can feel it of course.

When you pull the Superchip to see what it was doing for you, make sure to disconnect the battery, as if you don't, you'll still have most of the Superchip program there in accumualted memory, so you won't feel much of a difference when you remove it.

Disconnecting the battery clears that memory and allows a fresh program load, so you can do a back-to-back type of comparison, and get a better feel for exactly what it's doing for you.

Not disconnecting the battery will result in the power gain going away very gradually, and prevents you from being able to make direct comparisons.

Just FYI....

Best of luck, & don't hesitate to call us if you'd like to go over this in more detail.

Well I have approx. 2000 miles with a superchip in.
At first I did not think it was worth the money , however after towing a 27 ft travel trailer along with the back of the truck loaded with kids stuff and my wife and two kids and two dogs along I can say I am somewhat impressed. I was able to tow with the overdrive engaged and not having the engine whine at 2600RPM'S. I did not wait long to put it in I put it in with only approx. 750 miles on the truck. The only trouble I have had was with the chip looseing up and just barely coming out of the box. Causing the truck to sporacticaly shutdown. When I put the ecu back in this time I did not replace the plastic clip that holds it steady against the wall. Anybody else have this trouble?

That black pressure clip that holds the computer to it's mounting bracket should and can be re-installed once you install the Superchip. It simply goes back on a couple inches lower. It's true the computer is already held in place by the connection to it's wiring harness, but you don't want the computer being able to shake loose and move at all, as a general rule.

If you have any trouble doing that, give us a call and we'll go over this with you.

Best of luck!

Well I got my chip installed. The installation went pretty smooth, thanks to you all's help. I have about 100 miles with it and I have seen a big difference in the smoothness and timing of the shifts. Thanks again 1stnuford
