travel trailer towing advice?
2002 SC, 5.4, 4x4, 3.55 rear axle ratio (rated for 7700 Pounds..take that for what it's worth)
Currently tow a 4000 pound trailer comfortably, but need to upgrade size-wise some. A lot of folks use the 80% rule (that would be 6160#). I've always refused to even look at anything over 5000#...but that eliminates about everything. Any suggestions???

ok here goes since you are new i'll take it easy on you. big daddy says he once towed 6700 #'s with his 2001 f-150 s/crew. traveled from the mountains of tennessee to the mouse house in florida. upgraded to 2004 s/crew and did the same types of towing. only difference gas mileage incresed and was alot more pleasureable to tow. the 2004 towed with ease. so did my 2001 but in my opinion the 2004 handled the load more stable. just my 2 cents worth of info. if i can be of any assistance please e-mail or respond here. late. b.d. out.
ps i have 2 wheel drive and i think you can tow 1000# less with a 4 X 4.

Just for another reference.
02 SCREW, 3.55, 4.6 4x4
Enclosed 22' weighing about 6000+ with race car and parts.
Truck box with parts, generator etc.
4 passengers.
Total combined weight is close to 12,000 lbs.
Fuel milage about 9 mpg.
Extra trans cooling, syn blend Mercon V fluid, larger radiator.
Deep trans pan about to go on with fluid change.
I can tell you this IS pushing the limit and would reccomend 4.10 gears and a shift kit in the trans to prolong life.

I used my supercrew to tow my trailer before. My trailer weight is 6100 lbs empty. It didn't do that bad but I never went far with it. I didn't win any races but I did get where I wanted to go. I know of others that are towing about the same size and weight of trailer with theirs. Mine was rated for 12 500lbs total and I was close without water.

Great info you all have on this here forum.
I have a 2005 Supercrew 4x4, 5.4, 6"lift, 35" toyo's on 20" rims. Wanting to buy a TT to take camping. However, most that I like are either pushing the weight limit or are over the limit. I believe the GVWR is 7200 or 7700lbs. I believe the truck would do fine pulling but, would like to here some of your recommendations/experiences.
Also, Would you recommend a 5th wheel, if I purchased the sliding hitch?
Thanks
