Whipple Oil Turned Red
I have a 2.3 Whipple on my 2005 5.4. I've had it since 2006 with 56,000 miles. The supercharger is working fine but the oil has turned rust red not black or dark. I've called Whipple and another supercharger repair company and neither will tell me what is causing this. Both want me to send it in to the tune of $850-$950. This can't be the only supercharger to do this!
I've taken the front cover and cleaned everything as best I can but it still turns the oil the color of motor oil (normally it's clear) after a short while. No noise and no endplay. Anyone seen this before? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.f15...f09627602c.jpg |
Nope.
But I'd just run it till it pops for that $$ tune. |
considering the cost of a new s/c. potential engine damage, breaking down and needing a tow...I would send it in
Maybe send oil in for oil analysis? |
Sorry to bring up an old thread, BUT what ever became of the orange oil? Did we ever figure out the cause? I ask because I have the same problem now.
thanks Dave |
Check the intercooler.

Yeah that all looks clean/good, the coolant level looks normal. Could coolant get up past the rotors and up in the Whipple oil?
|
I'm not really sure without taking one apart. It could be blow-by with high moisture content. By chance, do you have a catch can installed?
How long does it take before the oil turns that brown-red color? |
Old school breathers on the valve covers. I was going to clean the sight glass when I noticed the oil was a rusty color. I've been around cars and the automotive industry my entire life, this is a strange one. The heat exchanger isn't under enough pressure to squirt coolant up in the whipple? is it?
|
I was reading on another forum regarding this, and it could be. Again, not totally sure.
I'd change the oil and keep an eye on it, if you haven't already. |
Crazy. Will do.
do you have a link to that forum thanks Dave |

Sorry I can't be of much more help. There's just not a lot of talk about it. Generally speaking, Whipple S/Cer's are quality. |
So I guess I'll top it off and keep an eye on things.
