98 f150 5 speed lightning swap
Picked up a 98 4.6 5 speed truck. It has motor issues so I'm gonna swap to the 5.4 I have and put a lightning blower on it. The engine I have is supposed to be from a lightning so if it has forged pistons I will swap in the forged rods I have too.
I'm sure someone is gonna point out that ford never put the M5OD behind the 5.4, much less with a supercharger but hey, I like to party! Seriously with a good shifter and fluid we will see if it will hold. If not ill look at a midshift tremec or t56 swap |
Member JMC put a 5.4 with a Procharger into his M5OD truck, and I believe he's been through 7 transmissions now.

In researching this trans I have found 2 types of people that talk about them.
1. I have a stock truck and have killed 10 of them. 2. I have a 4wd on 38s and do 4wd burnouts on pavement and have 300k on the stock trans I have found that good fluid and a good shifter help a lot. Its kinda like the T5s in foxbodys. Ive seen guys with a 347 stroker and a blower have a 4 cyl trans live and I've seen guys with a stock 5.0 break them every other week |
If you are willing to spend the money, nowadays you can remake the parts using harder materials.
Some of the inherent design problems with the M5OD can be alleviated with making better parts. It's not going to be something you'll be buying off the shelf. I'm talking a machine shop that have access to equipment to essentially duplicate parts. |
#2 is full of #2
but as long as you go into knowing it could be an issue, then move forward. hope you have a healthy budget. |
M5ODs are cheap, if I break it I can swap internals into this case. And like I said if it breaks, I'll fix it. If it breaks again I'll fix it and drive it gently until I can source a TKO or T56 swap

So how much do you think it will cost start to finish?

I've gotten good deals on everything. Paid 500 for the truck, 500 for the lightning blower (probably 80% of what is needed) trading for the 5.4 but roughly 400 in it. 500ish for a tune so maybe 2500 all said and done.

go for it.
if you can get it all going for $2,500, you will be a f150 god. $500 truck $400 used motor $500 lightning blower set-up should be interesting to say the least. |
I already have those 3, other than a few parts missing from my blower setup. I still need the crank pulley, air inlet tubing and MAF, fuel rail and a tune. Plus a few random hoses.
Truck should be up and running with an NA 5.4 within 2 weeks for about 1200. Then whatever I end up with in the blower setup past the 500 I already have in it. |
Can we get a video of it running and you driving it?

When I get it together

Already looks like an interesting project.

So I had some time last night and started reviewing transmission threads from JMC. It actually encourages me. He has about the power I'm looking for and apparently beats the **** out of it constantly on 4wd and 33s. I should be fine with a little judicious throttle as well (no powershifts or clutch dumps)
