2006 f150 turbo build

Starting the turbo build on my truck. Only have the intercooler and turbo now but more is on the way.

76mm turbo. Not quite sure where it's going to be yet.

31x12x4 intercooler

Intercooler stuck in place but not mounted. I didn't get pictures of the bracket I started fabing up for it.

Are you fabbing it all up yourself? Haven't seen a front mount on these trucks. Good luck!

06 Roush 03-15-2015 09:21 AM

Yep, all fabbed up by me. I will be doing everything except the tuning. This is my daily driver ,so I will be building the kit a little bit at a time then taking it back off the truck until final install. This is my first turbo build, so any advice is welcome.

What's the specs on the turbo? What power are you going for?

widj 03-15-2015 02:48 PM

oh my, I can't wait to see the finished product for this, I wish I would have gone turbo on mine!

is your engine stock?

06 Roush 03-15-2015 04:45 PM

It's a 76mm, .96ar exhaust, .80ar comp side. T4 flange.

I'm shooting for 400rwhp for now until I get my built engine and trans in, then I would like to hit 550rw.

The engine is stock. Current mods are: longtubes (getting replaced with shortys or manifolds), roush catback, cat less y pipe, underdrive pulleys, electric fans, and Frpp hot rod cams.

I'm not sure what size hotside to run. Would dual 2.5" merged into a single 2.5" under the truck and ran back to the front be okay? I'm not sure if I can get 3" routed the way I would like. Any ideas?

Bracket I started fabing for the intercooler. Ran out of welding wire.

Had to trim a little bit to get the intercooler in.

Had to move the bar I the middle back an inch at the bottom for intercooler clearance.

Picked up a 5.4 3v longblock to build and tore it down.

Porting the heads myself

Exhaust side.

where do you guys learn how to do all of this?

don't tell me YouTube I won't believe you ;)

taking out an engine, knowing what is doing what and making all of this work you guys must have learned that at school or how does it works? (I'm jelly)

06 Roush 03-15-2015 08:44 PM

Just get in there and do it. Like I said this is my first turbo build, I may be doing this completely wrong :D lol

2.5 inch shortie headers on reverse sides of the engine may work. I'm not sure if hoses or anything will get in the way. 2.5 inch pipe to a t4 will support more then your goals. .96AR is a tad small on a 76mm on a 5.4. Although these engines only go to about 5000 rpm I would think a large 5.4 would have it spool quick and possibly taper off to soon. Might be a trial and error but I think like a 1.xx AR may be better. Also I'm around 450-500rwhp on stock trans and bottom end. Twin is over 475rwhp on stock bottom end. Set your sights over 400 the truck can handle it. On a built motor the only thing holding us back is fuel pump setup. Fore had a kit but only a few made it out. Custom fuel setup will be needed. Hot rod cams work excellent with my Whipple and I assume will with your turbo even though turbos are sensitive to cams.

I would think a 3 inch exhaust pipe could be routed by the drivers side exhaust header/manifold. There is a ton of room. Then it can cross over to the passenger side the way the stock exhaust currently does. I would run a straight pipe with gotts o2 mods (spark plug foulers on oxygen sensors) for no cats. My 47lb injectors still have room to grow on my setup. I would run them or 60lbers. Mass air setup means you can't vent to atmosphere as it will confuse the computer making it think the trucks lean.

I have a set of 42# injectors I'm going to run for now. The down pipe is just going to be dumped into the passenger side fender well for now, later on I might run it farther back.

I just want to stay 400rwhp for now just to play it safe. This is my only vehicle at the moment.

Mines a daily driver. 50k miles put on with a Whipple, 30k of those with 10psi (400+ RWHP), 5k with Cams and 12psi combo. :thumber:

Got a couple of hours in after work

Intercooler in place with only the top bracket

Intercooler in place

Still have to make a bottom bracket

06 Roush 03-16-2015 10:03 PM

I think 400 will be fine for now I don't want to go crazy yet. Like I said after the new engine and trans are in I'll start cranking it up.

Exactly. Just do it. You can do anything if you put your mind to it.

Nice project btw. Looking forward to seeing it come to life.
