Whipple Problem... Need Help
 
I just got the Whipple all installed and now I notice that it leap frogs once the rpm goes above 2700 ( the rmps bounce up and down and I can hear the blower suck then stop then suck then stop...). Does anyone know what could be causing this? I have headers, exhaust and valve body just so you know. Also, I am planning on driving over to the Seattle area tomorrow to get a dyno tune done but dont know if it will be worth it if my truck is not running properly. What do you all think?

what plugs are you running? are you making boost in cold weather? is there any vacuum leaks? is everything torqued down properly???

I'm running the ford racing 0 degree plugs that come with the kit. I just check and everything seems to be hooked up properly. I hoping it has something to do with the tune and the tuner can fix it. Otherwise its back to the shop.

what is the gap on the plugs?? and how much boost are you seeing? how much are you tuned for???

I have no idea what the gaps on those plugs are, i would have to look it up. I have the 8psi set up but I dont have a boost gauge so I dont know what I'm getting. Can you tell me why the gaps on the plugs make a difference, and I have the ones in that were designed for the kit.

also in the cold weather your MAF is prone to pegging,which means leaning out your a/f and causing detonation.

if the plugs are too hot then your pistons can heat up and create detonation

if the plugs are gapped wrong then you could be experiencing spark blow out...

I got the tune, it helped a little but the problem still exhaust. Also, I noticed that the rpm is only jumping between 2700 and 3100 rpm. So that might help to narrow the problem down. Also, I am going to need a new fuel pump, any sugestions?

I'm betting its in the tuning. Throttle sensitivity is set wrong. How is it at wot? Also under normal take offs do you hear the boost (blower noise) come and go? It sounds and feels like your letting on and off the gas pedal?

It is fine at wot when I get the rpm above 3100. On normal take offs the blower noise is constent. I only ( so far) have noticed the problem when crusing on the highway at about 2000 rpm, when I hit it to speed up or pass it struggles once it gets into the 2700-3100 range, so I have to floor it to get the rpm past that level, then its fine.

Does anyone know how much hp I should be seeing at the rw with my setup? I have the Whipple at 8psi with gibson headers and exhaust. I figured I should make around 400rwhp but i'm only getting 360. I read that someone else with who doesnt have anything more then me besides the 39 lb injectors is getting 427. Why is this? Is it just that I have 4 wheel drive and he might not?

As far as the problem I have been having I'm gunna check the gaps on my plugs and see if thats the problem. Guess I forgot to do that before I put them in, not sure why that would only make a difference between 2700 and 3100 rpm.

Give us more info... is 360rwhp with a custom tune or factory whipple tune?

What rpm are you pulling too? Are you getting your full 8psi? What is your injector duty cycle? If you got a re-tune did the 2700-3100 rpm hesitation get fixed? What is your air/fuel ratio?

There is NO way you are going to get 427rwhp on stock injectors, I doubt 400rwhp is even possible. I would be willing to bet your injectors are your limit. I would buy #60 injectors, up the psi with either a lower pulley or another upper, gap your plugs, then go for a re-tune.

I honestly Don't understand why Whipple decided to use your factory injectors... Seems VERY stupid IMO. The 10psi pulley and 39# injectors should be standard.

Also your shorty headers hardly help, if at all... Your y-pipe going into a single 3" exhaust is a restriction also. The 400+rwhp stage everyone really needs at least dual 2.5" exhaust pipe. At 500rwhp you should really start thinking about dual 3"

What tuner did you go to?
