5x7's Polk EX or Infinety Ref whats better?

i have the polk gx series right now, and they cant handle the power from my head unit. they are too loose (rattle) and i do have dynomat.

im upgrading thursday......

which is better, they are both the same price, i've heard infinety is made better, where they didn't move as much when you push on them....

I have Infinity Reference 5x7's in my doors, and they do not rattle. They don't have an amp pushing them though. And the Dynamat speaker kit's seemed to keep out the rattle's. Just my 2 cent's.

RE: Polk's Or Infinitys ?? # 1

First off-

No one can tell you what speakers your ears will like. However, a few basic rules tend to apply to speakers:

1. The more they cost, the better they sound. This isn't 100%, iron-clad, but it is true most of the time.

2. If you are listening to various types of speakers in the same general price range, they will all perform pretty much the same.

3. Quality component speakers will always outperform co-axial or tri-axial speakers.

4. If you connect $100 speakers to $1,000 worth of electronics, you get $100 sound. Speakers are the single most important link in a sound system, closely followed by amplification.

Speaking of amplification...

If you overdrive ANY speaker, it will distort. However, more speakers are damaged from under-powered systems than from high powered systems. Most of the posts I've read speak of "rattling" from speakers. The speakers (if they are not the factory units) are probably not at fault. The head unit is the likely problem.

NO head unit can deliver 45 watts RMS per channel of clean power. There simply isn't room for the necessary electronics to do so. They might PEAK 45 watts, but this peak is exactly what is causing the speakers to distort. Take a look at an aftermarket power amp. Pretty large to deliver even 35 watts per channel...

Post # 3 will detail my experience with F-150 audio...

Now, for what it's worth...

I previously owned a '98 F-150 Ext. Cab. I installed a component Polk Audio system in both front doors and in the rear door / compartment.

The head unit was replaced with a Kenwood in-dash CD with changer control.

System was powered by a Kenwood 4 channel, 35 watt per channel amplifier.

I added a JL Audio sub box (underseat, 2 - 8" drivers) powered by a MTX 2100 amplifier.

The system sounded fantastic and I received many complements from other audio minded friends.

I originally had Pioneer 6"x8"'s all the way around. After much experimentation, I found that they just could not reproduce sound the way I liked. Hence, the Polks...

Post # 4 (last one, I promise) details my latest rig...

I now own a 2001 SuperCrew. I started by replacing the speakers with Polk 5"x7"'s. They sounded OK, but they lacked the clarity and punch the 98's Polk components had (from RE: Polk's Or Infinity's # 3 post).

I installed 2 sets of MB Quart Q-Series components, all in the doors of course.

I added a custom enclosure (I built) with 2 - 10" Polk Subs. The subs are powered by a 520 Watt JVC amp, the components by a 400 watt 4 channel JVC amp.

I will go on record as saying this: I have not heard a better sounding speaker, at any price, than the MB Quart speakers. They outperform the original Polk components from my '98, and they simply sound AWESOME.

Be sure to audition them before you spend your cash on anything else !!!

PS. If anyone needs specific info regarding the SuperCrew installation, let me know.

F-150 Super Crew

Looking at keeping the head unit with the CD changer in mine. This system has never been touched. I am wondering what would be the best way to go for the money. I know I want MB Quarts in the doors BUT the subs a different. Does anyone know where I can get a pre made box in Los Angeles or Orange County for this, fab or molded does not matter to me so long as I can get enough bass of of them.

Would it be better to get a 5 channel amp or two different ones like a 4 channel and then one for the subs. Sorry been a long time since I did a nice system in my cars or trucks and everything has gone and changed on me.
