What are the best 6x8's for use with Factory HU?

I've got a '01 Harley Screw that I want to upgrade the speakers in. I don't want to change HU for break-in bait. Don't really want the added expense of an amp either. I just want something better than the anemic sounding system I have now.

Reading the past post, it looks like the Polk DX7's were the speaker of choice, but it appears Polk no longer makes those. So what would be the best speakers that will sound good running off the stock HU?

I would suggest you get some 6.5 inch round speakers instead of the oval speakers because they tend to sound better (you don't see any home theater systems that use oval speakers do you). You can go to www.sounddomain.com there you can find the speaker adapters that will let you fit the 6.5 inch speakers in the oval spaces. As for the speakers I would suggest some Image Dynamics CTX6. They also come with a "Dynamic Control Xtreme Door Kit". So if you decide to get two pairs you can get two door kits valued at $179.90 for only $2.00.

Thanks for the tip on the round speakers . . . I have a 'How-To' article on making adapters!

What does everyone think about adding separate tweeters to upgraded speakers with a stock HU . . . ?

I say go for it but you'll get the best quality if you use a crossover. Most decent tweeters should come with crossovers.

FWIW, 5 x 7's will drop right into your stock 6 x 8 holes and there is a much better speaker selection.

Before I got an amp and upgraded HU, I put Infinity components in front with my stock deck. Sounded much better than the factory speakers, but even though the Infinitys I used were rated as OK with a low watt deck, they really responded to more power!

5X7 Inffinity Kappa's fit well and sound great.

Dirt Bike Dave,
How do you like the JBL GTO7525 speakers? I just purchased four of them for my Supercrew and they are arriving today. Also how do you like the US Acoustics USX4065 amp? I ordered one of these today, they look like they are really good amps for the money. I am installing a Rockford Fosgate HU and JBL BP300.1 sub amp and 10" ACI Rage sub as well. Thanks in advance.

Gold Super Crew,
I have the JBL's unamped and running as rear fill off my Clarion HU. My amp powers the front components (bottom of the line Infinity) and my sub.

I bought the JBL's off the internet and had not heard them, but liked their fairly good specs for low frequency - I put them in before I got my amp and sub.

While the JBL's are certainly better than the stock speakers, my rear ones sound pretty 'muddy' with either the stock deck or the Clarion. It may just be the rear speaker position - I never put the JBLs in the front.

With my sytem the rear speakers are almost irrelevant as the front speakers and sub do almost all the work.

Overall, I am very pleased with the amp, especially considering its budget price. It's been 100% reliable and sounds good to me!

Amped and in the front location your JBL's might sound much better than mine.

Best wishes setting up your system.

I just installed 4 new JBL GTO7525 6X8 coaxs in my Supercrew and am very pleased with their sound and they are not even broke in yet(1 hour so far). They have gotten alot better after an hour of play and can't wait till they have 20-30 hours on them. The tweeters angle and the imaging is very good. This is phase one of Stereo system install as I am changing HU and adding 4 channel amp for the JBL's and a 10" sub and mono sub amp.:D

I love my Polk Ex368s. I am using an external amp though. I am sure they are sensitive enough for the HU.

Going with the round 6.5 idea, how deep of a mounting depth works in the doors? Crutchfield doesn't list this size on their 'What fits' application, of course...since they don't count on adapters

Pioneer 6x8's

I gotta dissagree, I'll put my 6x8's up against any 6.5" speakers. I highly reccomend them, they sound awsome, the tweeter is adjustable for imaging. The model # is down in signature.

svtoby150 - Did you have any clearance problems with these Pioneer speakers as far as depth in the door??
