Questions on shallow 10's
 

I looking to upgrade my factory sounds. Im trying to fiqure out which shallow 10 to get Im kinda on a budget and have looked at all the speakers I can think to search of. I was into messing with speakers and all about 10 or so years ago. I like the cost of the kickers and the forgates shallows, but want the best sound for the money, would love to have a JL or Alpine. I have read proably 75 pages on this forum trying to fiqure out whats the best. Im gonna build my own box and I have a amp from like 1999 that use to be hooked to a kicker cvr 12. I cant fiqure out much info on my amp just looking for some help i know there a bunch on here that know, looking at buying an amp if mine isnt correct. A little advice would be great. Thanks

Does your amp still have the model number and brand name on it anywhere? Maybe we can help find the specs on it and figure out if it will work for you. If you cant find any model number post some pics of the amp.

If your going with a ten inch sub you can probably get away with a regular sub instead of a shallow sub. Since your on a budget I would look into that instead because with shallow subs you really get what you pay for.

I couldn't dig up any info on the amp either. It will be hard to determine how many watts that amp actually makes because the wattage numbers on the amp are usually way overrated. I would replace it with a class D mono amp since it will only be running a sub.

I would probably start by building, designing or buying the box first. That way you have an idea of how much airspace and mounting depth you have to work with. These factors will help determine what sub will perform and sound the best in your box.

An amp that old actually probably does the power it states, especially if its 1ohm stable. That wasn't a common feature back then.

Your right I forgot about the old school amps, guess the Boss Audio name threw me off.

Boss (Boss American Amp) is a super cheap flea market brand amp. Wal Mart sold them for awhile as well. I've seen more burn up on install then work correctly. The RF shallows are good, I have a set in my FX4 and using a Kicker DX250.1 to power them.

Well I built my box today looking at the box on supercrew sound and trying to make as big as i could similar to there box, I tried to do the math and fiqure the volume best I can figure its about .95 cubic ft Im trying to find a sub that will mount in there correct just about all i can find would be the shallows or the JL 10W1v2-4 do yall know about this JL cause I dont want a shallow any more.

What is the maximum mounting depth of your box?

The JL 10W1v2 is a pretty good subwoofer. If your box is .95 cubic ft, it might have a little too much airspace for that sub. You could always put something like a block of wood in the box to decrease the airspace if needed. I had two JL 8w1v2 subs in my truck a few years ago and they had pretty good output and good sound quality IMO.

Man that site makes it easy, i refigured to come out with .79 cubic ft I feel better about this number. Best I can figure about mounting depth it looks like not much more than 4 3/4, Im gonna cut a 2 in hole in it today so I can get a more accurate mesurment. I think Im gonna go get that JL today, or see if the local JL shop has one.

Well unfornatually the box I made aint gonna work, I built it to deep not really knowing how high off the floor it needed to be, I went and picked up the R3 Fosgate shallow with a kicker amp, I found some carpet and after about 2 hours of putting carpet on it got the speaker installed and it was slamming I am very suprised how good that thing sounds, I had to lift the box off the floor to make it sound good, so Im gonna go pick up the f150 box at the local audio store and carpet it myself.
