Two 8's or one 10
I'm going to be building a box for my Screw and was wanting some input from guys who have used 8" subs, or shallow mount 10's.
I've had several 10" and 12" sub setups in different vehicles. I've got just a single 10" Alpine typeR in my mustang right now and it hits very nice, but the mounting depth of that sub would be way to deep for the truck box. I was looking at the Pioneer shallow mounts for both setups. Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated! |
If you can muster 4.5" of depth, 2 Alpine Swr-843d or 823d's would outperform the 10" no problem
|
I have listened to the Pioneer shallow subs in person and they don't sound very good IMO.
What kind of amp will you be using? The shallow type r subs sound good but are expensive. |
polk mm subs are great i have 1 8in in my mustang right now and it hits quite nice
|
So, no to the pioneers. Which is fine....I was just going to be able to get one for a good deal, but you get what you pay for!!!
I've got a kenwood (can't remember the modle #) D series amp. Puts out like 900rms at one ohm if I remember corectly. I've got the same one powering the 10" type R in my mustang and it pushes it pretty hard!!!! I guess I need to do some more sub research to see what I can fit in the box I want to build. So overall opinion.....Two 8's or one 10"????? The 10" would have to be a shallow mount, the 8"s would depend on the sub I would pick. I listen to mostly Rock, but occasionaly some rap, so I'm mostly looking for that tight hitting base. |
Yeah I would say no to the Pioneer shallow. I have listened to one in person and I thought it made too much mechanical noise, instead of clean bass.
If I had to choose between one ten or two eights, I would go with the eights. Any quality eights in the right box volume should sound good. What type of box are you building? One similar to this? http://www.supercrewsound.com/commer...Id=10&catId=58 |
Well I was going to try to keep it all underneith the driverside rear seat. I think I can get enough box voulume out of it. I would just have to keep it a sealed box.
If I went with one that went all the way across, I would just go ahead and use two 10's, but I'm not looking for base that you can hear for blocks. I just want decent sound quality. |
Ok I see, I had a box like that once for a single twelve in my old F150. I also had two eights in my current truck and I liked the sound quality.

I've got a question about one sub as well. I've got an '11 Screw and I've grown quite addicted to the fold-flat floor in the back. I have the stock Sony sound system, but I'm replacing the non-nav head unit with an AVIC z120bt and I plan to replace all speakers (including the stock sub) at the same time. I'm not looking for competition style, earth shattering bass, just great quality music. Can I build a box that will fit under the small passenger side rear seat and mount one single sub without completely sacrificing sound quality? I'm willing to spend money for a quality sub (within reason of course), but I don't know if there's enough space under the small seat to accomplish what I want. I guess the box could stick out beyond the small seat a little, but I want to keep the sub enclosure as compact as possible, if it's even possible. Any thoughts? FYI - I listen to alternative rock 90% of the time and country 10% of the time. Prefer SQ over SPL, but I'd say I'm in the middle. |

What year truck do you have ironhead498? I have a 2000 extended cab and I have 2 10" alpine type r's under my rear seat. I have the box that aims them toward the floor. Had to cut the top of the box above both subs because the magnent wouldn't fit. I have a few spacers on the bottom seat bolts to raise it up enough. Both the 40 and the 60 rest bench still lock and there is enough room under the subs to barely stick your fingers to. Since the bottom of the seat rests on top of the box, it doesn't move at all. They still sound awesome.

I haven't measured it out yet to know how much airspace we could squeeze under that single seat yet, but i plan to do the same thing. I think it could be done easily. You just need to find the right sub. I have a 10" in another car at the moment that is designed for .4-.6cuft sealed and it absolutely rocks. Just need to find the right sub designed for the enclosure etc.
I've been researching shallow subs and have seen a lot of good info about the SI BM's and that's when I found this thread: https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...errerid=155564 |

I've got a 2006 Screw. I ended up building a box for two 8's. It ended up right at 1cuft. The subs were some older mtx's that my brother-in-law had and it doesn't sound bad. I'm curently looking to buy some new subs for it though cause I think the subs are a little worn out. It sounds realy good for rock, but doesn't hit the low notes real well if you listen to rap. A ported box would probably help there but I didn't have enough room for that kind of box. |
Get two JL W7 8's... Get a good reputable dealer to build you a custom box ported and tuned with them facing forward... It would be insane.
