05RedFX4. Question. I too have been thinking about upgrading my sub speaker first, and maybe only. I have been looking at the 8" shallow mounting sub from Pioneer (TS-SW841D), it requires 2.5 inches. My question is, can I just plug the speaker in and go about my way? And, will my factory amp be able to push it hard enough? I'm not looking to win a competition, I just want a little more bass.

I'm not interested in a total upgrade and if I have to reconnect pins, then I will pass. If I can't get a big enough gain for the money spent, then I will pass.

I also was thinking if the 8" is good, what about drilling out the mount, getting a spacer and buying the Pioneer 10" shallow sub.... Thoughts.

Thanks,

You have to match the impedience of the subs and it will play. Who knows if it will fit.

The 8" pioneer will fit, but I do not reccommend it if you are going to use the factory amp. You need a 4 ohm dual voice coil sub to work with the factory amp. There is no way to fit the 10" without major surgery on the box.

2009-10 F150 8 inch Sony Subwoofer pics

Couldn't find pics anywhere showing the 8 inch subwoofer in the 2009-10 F150's with Sony 700 Watt system and Navigation. I'm not expert in posting pictures so this first post is an experiment - I uploaded pics onto Facebook and am pasting the link to each pic.

8 inch subwoofer in 2009-10 F150

Scratch that - posting 2009-10 F150 8 inch Sony subwoofer and amp pictures here after figuring out I can store online photo albums under my F150 online profile:

Subwoofer Assembly Label

Subwoofer removed - note the dual voicecoil. Opening is 7 1/4" and 3 1/2" deep to the screw boss. That screw you see on top of the subwoofer in the vechicle actually bolts right through the subwoofer base itself. Also note the baffling that sits in the cavity under the amplifier. And finally, on my unit one of the voicecoil leads was DISCONNECTED. So the sub was only amplifying half of my music. Upon reassembly this unit sounded much improved.

Back of subwoofer. Says "1.2 Ohm + 1.2 Ohm" and "60 W + 60 W" to indicate the impedance and power handling, respectively. Also note that hole through the center of the subwoofer as noted above, that's where the top-mounted screw attaches.

One of the voice coil leads was not connected properly by the factory!!

Has anyone tried running the stock amp at 1ohm?

I was wondering if anyone did the stock amp to 1 ohm because no one around me has any dvc 4ohm 8's. Also at 1ohm if guess the stocker would put out a little more power. I just don't know if it would fry.

amazon.com has them. or you can wire it in sires and run a 2ohm dvc at 4ohms.

At 4ohm won't the factory amp be 1/2 the power. I think it's 50 at 2ohm factory. I know I could order something. I was just wanting to grab something quick locally to tide me over.

Comments:

1) Stock Sony sub is top mounted (see photos). Top mount depth (TMD) is only 3 1/2" due to the recessed screw boss on the top of the sub box that sinks in about 1 1/2". So any stock sub replacement - e.g., without requiring mods - needs to be 3 1/2" TMD or less.

2) JimmysotherFORD says he installed the Polk MM840 DVC (dual 4ohm VC). That part, depending on who you believe, is either 4 1/8" TMD (Polk data sheet) or 3 15/16" (Crutchfield's own number... perhaps they measured a feew units and found Polk's TMD spec was too conservative? Dunno). In any event, this sub does not fit without making mods. JimmysotherFORD, how did you mount this sub - did you make a ring spacer around the sub to make it fit?

3) The Sony subwoofer has two 1.3 ohm voice coils, wired to what appears to be a two channel amplifier (wiring diagram below straignt from the F150 Wiring Diagrams Manual). The diagram is not clear enough IMO to say what's going on - there is only one subwoofer input to the amp (e.g., not stereo coming in) and yet the diagram shows two independent outputs driving each VC separately. So is this a 2-channel amp, each driving a 1.3 ohm load? Or is the diagram misleading?

4) I tried the Kicker CVR8 4ohm DVC sub, TMD = 4 1/4" so had to add a ring spacer. The SPL output was awful, think I should have tried the CVR8 with 2 ohm DVC to get more oomph. I guess I'm doubting how the Polk MM8 4 ohm DVC could sound any better, I think that Sony Sub amp really wants to see lower impedance to get meaningful output.

5) The only 8" sub I found that fits is the Kicker CVT8 SINGLE voice coil. Comes in either 2 ohm or 4 ohm, I'd recommend the 2 ohm based on above comments. TMD = 3 3/8" so no mods are required to make it fit. It's one of those "shallow sub" designs, which I have no experience with so can't say if bass will be great or not. Finally, looking at that wiring diagram again, how would you wire up a SVC sub? One obvious way is to just use one amp output and leave the other disconnected - but would this cut out half of the amp's power? Is it possible to instead bridge that Sony Sub amp? (e.g., connect + from one amp output and - from the second sub output to the SVC). That seems risky...

6) Here are photos of the actual Sony Subwoofer Amplifier Module itself. Only have to remove 6 star-pattern screws and this PCB slides right out of its metal heat sink housing.

I think we are talking about the 04-08 models and you are talking about the 2010 which is a different setup.

never said i had a factory sub. mine is in a custom box, and powered by a 2ohm stable rockford p-250. NOLAGT should ditch the factory stuff since it is crap, but i'm assuming (that in this economy) he might not be looking to drop $300-$400 in a top notch setup.

I plan to do a full system in the future...I was just thinking I could get something semi cheap and local that would add a little bump over stock for the time being. I could always use the 8 after elsewhere for a little project.
